Is this the beginning of the end for Nintendo?

I’ve said for a while now that for all its success over the past five years Nintendo actually never had any idea what it was doing, but this latest Wii U rumor seals the deal beyond a reasonable doubt. Basically, the Wii U is shaping up to be as ill-defined and rushed as the 3DS. Its centerpiece, the single-point of contact non-HD touchscreen, allegedly isn’t working without a tether, ...

Rumor: Price chopped 3DS is already being targeted for a major do-over

When it rains it pours: Nintendo is allegedly sending the 3DS back to the shop for a major 2012 overhaul, including a head-scratching $10 add-on thumbstick that will attach to the devices’s right side and a decreased emphasis on 3D capabilities. The disheartening rumor arrives courtesy a tipster over at 1UP, who has in the past successfully provided insider information about the Wii U and So...

Name that company

Hey! A little game to start off our Tuesday. What fun! Here it goes. It’s pretty simple: Guess the mystery company using the clues provided. Blame the customers for lower than expected sales. Fledgling handheld. Rumored $400 next-gen console. Ignore the competition, label it insignificant or kiddie or even dangerous to the industry. Use weird doublespeak and borderline lies in your press rel...

I’m not buying the Nintendo 3DS

Huh. Typing out those words was a bit easier than I thought it would be, especially for such an ardent fanman like myself. One more time, just to be sure: I’m not going to buy a 3DS. Here’s why:

Nintendo Vitality Sensor, we hardly knew you (or Nintendo needs a fresh image already)

I was once a semi-champion for the Nintendo’s Wii Vitality Sensor, but now even I have given into reason and rationality: This vaporware peripheral, for me, is all but dead on arrival.

So, yeah, this is a real thing that happened

My brain hurts. I thought stuff like this had died out in the great Wii plastic accessory add-on extinction level event of 2009. Oh, how wrong I was. Just $50 if you act now.

What the hell is up with that Nintendo 3DS price tag?

When I’m wrong, I admit it, and I’m eating crow today after seeing the Japanese launch price for the 3DS. Nearly $300, after conversion from yen to U.S. dollar? Cripes! Now, the West rarely pays a 1:1 equivalent when it comes to how things are first priced in Japan before they come here (same for Europe with VAT, and all that), but still…I’m having trouble seeing how this 3...

Rant: “Filmmakers”

The only way you will ever hear me say that a “movie mode” in Metroid Other M is a “good idea” is if Team Ninja has also installed an option that allows me to play the game without any cutscenes or cheesy voice acting whatsoever. Unbelievable. I mean, really, really unbelievable. An August release date make total sense now. This game is forgotten by Christmas. I’m ang...

Netflix Wii adoption not that bad

Netflix on Wii has been a modest success, reports Reggie Fils-Aime, with almost 1 million users logging in and using the disc-based service since its inception last month. As GamesIndustry.biz puts it, this information “flies in the face” of “analyst” Michael Pachter, who “predicted” Wii owners would not warm to the service because they don’t go online as ...

This cutscene-heavy Metroid Other M trailer makes me sad

It’s a good thing Super Mario Galaxy 2’s trailer blew me away by oozing utter FUN when I saw it last week, because all these cutscene-laden, voice acted bits of fluff trickling out of the Team Ninja camp regarding Metroid Other M are really starting to damage my calm. Seriously, who spilled hammy, Final Fantasy angst and cinematics all over my Metroid franchise? Simply awful. No wonder...

Pop quiz

If you take three sub-par action titles that didn’t do well on the Wii because they weren’t really all that good to begin with, and then package them into a three pack with the word “violence” on the cover, will they sell better and be received warmly by the enthusiast gaming press? Multi-part answer: No, and *probably* not, depending on who’s writing the article. Als...

Oops!

The Capcom Frenchman, he be muzzled: Further to comments made in a recent article on French website Gamekult, Capcom would like to confirm its commitment as a multi-platform developer and publisher of interactive software. Kind regards Capcom’s European PR Team Nice try, but an apology to the consumers would have been better. Stop blaming customers when your software doesn’t sell, Capc...
