Report: Wii will rule the holiday season

According to the analysts at U.K.-based Screen Digest, Nintendo’s current success with the Wii means great things for the company during the important holiday quarter, and further realignment towards the Wii at the publisher level is set to continue as it has throughout 2007. GameDaily BIZ: 86 titles are scheduled for release on the Wii in Q4, compared with 47 for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 ...

Console race progress report

In line with Blake’s Wired “do it in a sentence” post from earlier this morning, I though I’d throw up a series of three interviews over at Gamasutra that are an impromptu progress report for each of the three consoles on the market today. That’s pretty much it on that. No extra commentary or snark or insults. OK, ok. One insult. Michael Pachter is an attention whore.

Wired reviews Wii, 360, PS3 in single sentence

The October ’07 issue of Wired magazine features a nifty geek encyclopedia that defines several geek related terms in A-Z fashion. Here’s how the index defined seventh-generation game consoles in a nutshell: Wii. A motion-sensing controller, simple games, and a low price make this the top 7th-genner. Xbox 360. Brilliantly conceived online-community features give this box sizzle. PS3. S...

Random theory – Wii game prices

Here’s an random theory to bounce around your brains:  Nintendo was relieved to see 360 and PS3 games come out at $60 a pop because it meant they could continue to charge $50 for their console’s titles. What I’m getting at is whether or not Wii games would be worth $50 if software for 360 and PS3 cost the same amount.  Share your thoughts about this random theory in comments!

Will PS4, Xbox 3 have motion/pointer controls?

Having fallen in love with Metroid Prime 3’s vastly superior first-person controls, I’ve gotta ask: {democracy:16}

Wii versus the world, analogy style

Joystiq is having some fun with George Harrison’s recent interview about the console wars, in which he invokes cars to make the whole war thing easier to understand. It’s not the first time this has happened. Sony was also caught making similar references with food and restaurants in a GamePro interview. We all know how that turned out. In an interview with The Motley Fool, Harrison co...

Online or Wiimote — which is more important to gaming’s future?

The installed base numbers don’t quite agree with Peter Molyneux on this point, but he’s out there saying it anyway. Maybe he’s one of those 3rd party chaps who just doesn’t “get” the Wii yet. There’s still time, Peter. Start thinking outside of that box. Start looking at the facts. If Live was the driver you say it is, then 3rd party developers would be c...

How one mass retailer describes game consoles

I stumbled on an advertisement from Circuit City a while back and got a chuckle in how they described current-gen game consoles, namely the Xbox 360, the Wii, and the PlayStation 3. Not that there’s anything wrong with plain, familiar (albeit cliched) language; it’s just funny to read the following marketing copy from a minutia-obsessed perspective (read: us). Here’s what the ret...

Console war arms race — hurting or helping the consumer?

This console war is truly a slippery slope. On the one hand, people often welcome sharp new graphics and processing speeds with open arms, because we humans absolutely love getting to that next plateau and fulfilling our manifest destiny wherever it may take us. On the other, we have our wallets; those mangy, leather bound bifolded containers of cash that we oft stick on our back pockets, or, if w...

Nintendo and the rising continent

Malstrom is at it again. Today he’s delivered us a series of new (and lengthy!) articles about gaming, Nintendo and the future of the industry as a whole. I think with the outrageous success currently being enjoyed by the Wii and its software (you know, the software that ignoramuses say doesn’t exist yet) this is an especially timely delivery. On a personal note, the reason I enjoy the...

Wii overtakes Xbox 360 in worldwide sales

The latest chart from VG Chartz shows us that Wii has outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3, worldwide. While that’s exciting and a little earlier than expected, the real point of interest is that Wii has sold nearly as many units in the Americas as the PS3 has worldwide. What should Sony learn from the current state of their console sales?

EA takes crazy pills, ignores market trends

EA is apparently throwing us all a curve this morning, given the fact that executives only recently divided up the company and created a dedicated “casual games” division. GamePro reports… Several sources are reporting that an Electronic Arts representative has confirmed that its Xbox 360 games take priority over other systems as multi-platform titles near completion. The represe...
