Wii is green, sips power

That green computing is so hot right now! Well, in the data center (geeky IT alert…) it is anyway, but it’s also cool to see that the little white box that’s changing gaming forever is sipping power, instead of gurgling it. Using a device called a Kill A Watt, Takahashi learned that the Wii consumes just 17 watts of energy, compared to the PS3’s 171 watts and his 360 Elite&...

Guitar Hero III promises to rock your face off

IGN has the first hands-on impression of Guitar Hero III on Wii. Though I’m pumped for Rock Band (not so pumped for its rumored $200 price tag), this $90 original alternative on Wii sounds very appealing.

Wii is fastest selling U.K. console ever

The momentum slows increases exponentially… The Nintendo Wii has become the UK’s fastest-selling home console in history, with 1 million units sold in 38 weeks. It was 50 weeks before PlayStation 2 hit the 1 million mark, while Xbox 360 took 60 weeks to reach the same target. According to Chart Track, the Wii now has a 68 per cent share of the UK home console market. The Nintendo DS al...

The Wii and the death of ‘traditional analysis’

What to make of analysts these days and their … analysis. More and more, I am seeing myself shrugging off what they say and seeing the light. Why? Because more and more, I see them as (mostly) men who are used to the status quo, and base their analysis on old models. Have I quoted many an analyst in the past to bolster the case for Nintendo? I have, and I am ashamed. No longer though.

Microsoft is officially rudderless

I’m going to add to what my new colleague Jake said in his post from earlier this morning. I’m not going to bash Microsoft in this post. I don’t have to. Taking a page from resident Infendo columnist-at-large Malstrom, I’m going to let the industry players speak for themselves.Xbox Marketing VP Jeff Bell in an interview published on Wednesday:

Nintendo Spotting: Mario arcade in ice cream parlor edition

“I found the super mario game at a ice cream place — called “the bob-in again frozen custard” in Petosky, Michigan — while on vaction. The best part about it was that you could play it as much as you wanted for free!!” [Taken July 17, 2007 by Ted Ledbetter.]

Okami for Wii rumor gets new life

Listen up, Konami CAPCOM. Okami is the game that was designed for the Wii, but doesn’t know it yet. It will find its way to that system, if you have any wits about you whatsoever. 1Up.com’s Quartermann hints at something: Quartermann also contends another popular rumor still has life in it: Okami on Wii. Capcom is already working on an upgraded port of the overlooked Zelda-style advent...

E for All: Consumers don’t really matter?

Basically, all the signs and portents say that E for All — the consumer-focused conference meant to replace E3 — is going to be dead on arrival when it begins in mid-October. There’s no Microsoft presence there, nor Sony, nor Activision, Capcom, NCSoft, Sega, Midway, etc. EA is rumored to be on the cusp of bowing out. The only company of note still committed to the conference is ...

Nintendo and the rising continent

Malstrom is at it again. Today he’s delivered us a series of new (and lengthy!) articles about gaming, Nintendo and the future of the industry as a whole. I think with the outrageous success currently being enjoyed by the Wii and its software (you know, the software that ignoramuses say doesn’t exist yet) this is an especially timely delivery. On a personal note, the reason I enjoy the...

Dual thumbsticks are for the birds, Metroid Prime 3 delivers

Just got my mitts on Metroid Prime 3 this morning: in a word, engrossing. Prime 3 controls feel like butter. Having hated them before, I now officially loathe dual thumbsticks when it comes to console shooters. The Wii Remote works so well, I literally remain on the edge of my seat because the action is so engaging.

No Wii development = obvious hole in your business strategy

Valve’s Gabe Newell takes a question from Game Informer about the PS3 and just blatantly starts talking about the Wii instead. Lovely. GI: Do you think from now on you’ll keep outsourcing PS3 projects [ed: Orange Box for PS3 is being done by EA], or will you start bringing those projects in house? Newell: I think we’ll bring them in house more for licensees issues than our own. J...

Geometry Wars is better on Wii

Wired’s Chris Kohler played a little of the new Geometry Wars Galaxies (well, new to the Wii anyway) at PAX, and came away a content little blogger. This might get me in trouble, but Geometry Wars Galaxies is way more fun on Wii than it was on the Xbox 360. I didn’t play that much of the 360 game, but the simple change — pointing with the Wiimote to aim your shots rather than use...
