“Today’s kids are soft”

From an email forward (thanks, Josh): Do you remember when you were a kid, playing Nintendo and it wouldn’t work? You take the cartridge out, blow in it and that would magically fix the problem. Every kid in America did that, but how did we all know how to fix the problem? There was no internet or message board or FAQ’s. We just figured it out. Today’s kids are soft. Bonus: While...

Top 50 best Mario games of all time

Or so say these guys. Out of more than 200 eligible games, Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix takes the last spot. Super Mario Bros. 3 takes the top spot, followed closely by Super Mario World and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Regarding the list, be sure to duck through all 50 pages’it’ll take a while.

This NES game is freakin’ hard

As recommended by Fuzz and Mark. Beat the first two levels during my first sit down with it though.

Murder!

…I will forever hate the guys at iFixit with the burning, white intensity of a thousand suns. [more here]

Remember how hard F-Zero GX was?

Anyone complaining about the lack of difficult games recently obviously missed this discouraging hard GameCube game. After 15 attempts, I don’t think I ever made it past the second track. I haven’t picked it up since.

Nevermind the critics: How 2D Mario beats 3D Mario

The Brainy Gamer writes: As much as we enjoy blasting 3D Mario into space and navigating him around 3D orbs, a quick glance at sales figures makes one thing clear. We like Mario best when his world is flat. We still, apparently, prefer running from left to right. Consider the numbers this way: Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 combined total sales: 12.3 million New Super Mario Wii total sales: 15.5 mil...

Nintendo releases Metroid retrospective narrated by Samus

NES controls that stand the test of time

In December, Game Informer named The Legend of Zelda “the greatest game of all time” on their Top 200 list. I disagree, if only for one reason: its controls’namely the inability to move diagonally, which fail to stand the test of time (having seen the light of modern controls). Make no mistake, playing Zelda in 1986 was a revelation. But playing today feels clunky, unlike Mario. Link&#...

What made GoldenEye 007 so good?

Was it the controls? The first of its kind on consoles? Something else? Whatever it was, I’m not so sure developer Eurocom will be able to revive the series on Wii, especially after reviewing their unimpressive portfolio.

Keep calm and carry on (playing games)

If Mario’s Princess-saving quest were to take place during World War II, it might have looked a little something like this. More here. Brilliant! (for reference)

Better than the real thing

Just some awesome Samus fan art to start the morning off right. I’ve heard this particular picture might be a bit “old” by Internet standards, but I really don’t care. Samus, and the Metroid series for that matter, are ageless. [via Kotaku]
