Players who pick up Pokemon X or Pokemon Y will, of course, have to choose between three new starter Pokemon: Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. Today’s Nintendo Direct revealed that, in addition to one of these, players will get to choose one of the original starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle (I’m wiping a tear of nostalgia away as I type). Going even further, the broadcast revealed new mega evolutions for the evolved forms of the original three: mega Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise.
Mega evolutions are made possible by the use of special stones that the Pokemon in question can carry and the “Mega Ring”, an accessory worn on the trainer’s wrist. When the connection between trainer and Pokemon grows strong enough, the mega evolution will take place. Though this was shown to be something quite special in the Nintendo Direct, it seems to be very similar to the series tradition of friendship evolutions.
Which Kanto starter’s mega evolution strikes your fancy? You only get one choice, after all! Watch the full Nintendo Direct here for more details.
