Nintendo’s first wave of amiibo figurines will launch alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on November 21st. Their built-in near-field communication (NFC) technology will allow players to scan them into compatible games easily by swiping them over the bottom left surface of the Wii U GamePad. In addition to their function in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, we now know how the figures will work in two games that are already out: Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors. Here’s the rundown:
Mario Kart 8
For now, only 10 amiibo have been confirmed compatible with Mario Kart 8: Mario, Yoshi, Kirby, Samus, Link, Captain Falcon, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Peach, and Luigi. Nintendo has designed racing suits for your Mii characters to race in based on each of these characters. Thanks to their respective visors, I think the Samus and Captain Falcon outfits look the best.
About two weeks ago, Nintendo revealed that Link’s amiibo would be compatible with Hyrule Warriors, leaving us to wonder exactly how it would work with the game. Now we know: it unlocks a new weapon for Link, the spinner. The spinner was a fan favorite weapon from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and now players can both ride it and decimate hordes of foes with it. Interestingly, every other amiibo that will be compatible with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has a use in Hyrule Warriors as well. Each one you scan into the game will give you a random material, weapon, or rupee. Not too shabby!
Other games that will have some sort of amiibo compatibility include Yoshi’s Wooly World, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Mario Party 10. We’ll have to wait and see what the NFC functionality does in each game at a later date!
