What are your holiday Nintendo traditions?

Infendo’s Derek has played Zelda: Ocarina of Time at least once a year — sometimes twice — since the game’s debut in 1998. “All told, I’ve probably beat it 20 times,” he says. “It’s my favorite game, although admittedly it’s also a nostalgic ritual.”

Derek didn’t say what time of the year he returns to this ritual, but I suspect it happens often over the holidays, like Thanksgiving this weekend.

I’m sure Derek isn’t alone. Any readers out there have anual Nintendo rituals, particularly during the holidays? If so, let’s hear it.

I’ve played a Metroid game the night before the first day of school for the last 4 years or so. I think it’s kind of a unique tradition.

Just playing all the new titles.

This is the one time of year where I can have more to play than I can actually play.

I used to have the tradition of my family playing games together on Thanksgiving and Christmas. 99% of the time, they were Nintendo (or games on a Nintendo system) games – because there’s hardly as much TOP-QUALITY games that are fun with the whole family.
(Guitar Hero/Rock Band doesn’t count if not everyone is into the genre – and not everyone enjoys dancing)

…sadly, as my family started separating, they saw those moments as the times when we “had to be together”, and even worse: “Actually enjoyed each others company”! (not a single fight has ever broke out when we played games together – it was all in good fun)
So they avoid it like the plague now.

So I’ll just have to wait until I have my own family to continue the tradition. 🙂

my tradition mainly consists of getting my presents and playing them as soon and as long as possible, despite the fact that the family party is at my house

It’s not quite a holiday tradition, but on the rare times I get to see one of my long time friends, we always pop in Namco Museum and play through the “arrangement” versions of Dig-Dug, Galaga, and Pac-Man in that order.

Luigi’s Mansion, Halloween night, nine or ten o’clock. Beat the whole thing, highest grade mansion, and attempt to get all gold frames on the paintings before midnight. Unfortunately, I don’t always get all gold frames… I’ve done this ever since I got the game!
