I recall fondly my first foray into Pokémon. It began over 14 years ago with a Pokémon Blue purchase at a local Toys R Us. I still recall the game’s packaging new smell, inserting the Game Boy cartridge, booting the game, and hearing Red/Blue’s theme song. On that day, I met Professor Oak and had to choose between three Pokémon: Bulbasaur (grass/poison-type) Charmander (fire-type) and Squirtle (water-type). The rebel in me chose Bulbasaur and together we blazed a path of glory through the early parts of the game. We easily defeated Brock, Misty and Lt. Surge, the rock, water and electric gym leaders. We were riding high. And then we got to Ericka, the grass gym leader, and she soundly defeated us. Sigh, so goes the life of a Pokémon trainer.
