Sorry, Tails. My money’s on Sonic.
SEGA Europe today revealed Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, a kart racer featuring some of the company’s most popular characters.
The game is currently scheduled to release in early 2010 for multiple platforms, Wii and DS included.
Details are sparse, but SEGA has confirmed Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Tails, Rose and Samba de Amigo’s AiAi and Amigo as playable characters so far.
Like Nintendo’s Mario Kart series, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing features weapons and power-ups players can use to thwart the competition, and each character also has a unique special move.
And, like Diddy Kong Racing, the game includes vehicles such as planes and bikes.
Despite its obvious similarities to two of Nintendo’s pioneering kart racers, however, SEGA insists Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing will be a unique product.
SEGA Europe has released several similar screenshots, no platform specified
“Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is no ordinary racing game,” says SEGA Europe’s marketing director Gary Knight. “Its huge variety of characters and vehicles, plus the ability to play both online and off, set it apart from other games of this type.”
“The team have pushed the boundaries of what you would normally expect,” says Knight. “(They’ve) created a different and unique party-racing title whereby you really can’t take anything for granted!â€
As Knight detailed, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing includes both a local split-screen mode for up to four players and online multiplayer.
The announcement first appeared on SEGA’s official press website, before being quickly removed. The game is still posted on SEGA Europe’s Sonic City Blognik, a blog devoted to the company’s flagship mascot.
Expect more on Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing at E3 next week.

“Its huge variety of characters and vehicles, plus the ability to play both online and off…”
Um…just like Mario Kart Wii…Only half of the characters are annoying right out of the box (I’m looking at you, Amy Rose). God, I pray they don’t talk.
Seriously, though, I’ll wait and see how this one develops. I’m not optimistic, but I won’t count it out for the sake of being fair.
By the way, “Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing” is a pretty awkward title. I hope they change it.
Lite (on a crappy PC!!)
*snickers at how true Andrew G.’s comment is*
If they put Big the Cat in there, Nintendo Power is gonna have a field day.

OMG Sega just when people thought that you couldn’t fall any lower.

Can you feel the sunshine? Does it brighten up your day? I hope they have that singing drag queen from Sonic R!!

I’ll buy it if
A) the Wii version is the best (usually the case with Sonic) and there’s no crappy Wii/PS2 shit going on.
and
B) Axel from Streets of Rage is a playable character

Oh and if Agent G is in it. HotD for the win!

I don’t really get why they are making this title. It will already be behind the 8 ball because it will be compared to Mario Kart Wii (and a 99% chance less favorably). It doesn’t make a lot of sense.
