Take a subtle blend of Rare-like gameplay, throw in special powers ripped from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and simmer it over a heaping pile of… slimy fungi and malodorous mushrooms.
It may not seem an appetizing blend, but fans of classic Rareware such as Star Fox Adventures and Conker’s Bad Fur Day should be excited about this recipe. It yields three cups of Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars, an action-adventure game with moldy mounds of porcini-plastered promise.
That doesn’t sound flattering, but it really is meant to be.
Developed exclusively for Wii by Red Fly Studios, made famous for its involvement with the highly anticipated Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars picks up after the events of Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi, which is scheduled for release on the Nintendo DS this fall. Rest assured, portable fans, we’ll have more coverage of the DS game on Infendo in the coming weeks.
But for now, onto the Wii game. GameTrailers recently posted an impressive new trailer for The Spore Wars, which is viewable below.
I am absolutely loving the horror movie campiness! As for details on gameplay and story, That Videogame Blog went hands-on with The Spore Wars in May and came away with these promising impressions:
“…The storyline revolves around a comet that passes close to Earth and leaves a rain of green dust that makes plants and animals gain consciousness, thus creating humanoid mushroom who have to fight for their lives against attacks from evil rabbits and other animals.
The levels are enormous and players are free to roam through them. Given the minuscule size of the main character, just climbing a chair or a table could prove quite a challenge. Luckily, the hero has a sticky hand, which is one of the characters major tools, and it allows him to reach far places.
…Players will be able to create a large amount of weapons by using several objects such as toothpicks, safety pins, an exacto knife and even a DS stylus. The weapon creation plays a major role in the game and seems to be quite addicting to scavenger for new weapon materials.
And while there is plenty of combat, puzzles are a big part of the game … . Mushroom Men’s art direction is spectacular, and it’s obvious developer Red Fly Studio has spent a good amount of time perfecting it. The color palette, at least for the level shown, has very dark tones, and the graphics are truly impressive for a Wii game.”
With an interesting story, impressive graphics and crucial puzzles, even the grossest recipes can have delicious results. Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars is being published by Gamecock Media Group and is set to spread its slimy spores onto Wii this October.
