Lewis Pugh is a game developer at Leuvsion ( for mobile platforms, born and bred on Nintendo gaming. Being a developer gives Lewis a unique perspective on Nintendo news, especially relating to the eShop and Nintendo Network. Today he plays Wii U and 3DS enjoying their distinctive gameplay offerings. Looking into what the future holds for Nintendo is always tricky, even with its established heritage, but that’s exactly what makes it so fun. NNID: Leuvsion

  1. First, as always, thanks for the shout out! Also, congratulations on taking the (Monster Hunter) dive Holly! I am a casual, hardcore fan, meaning I love the game(s) and enjoy playing, but have never taken the time to dive in and play for hours and hours (and hours and hours). Maybe we can all go on a hunt sometime….

As for Lou’s topic, I already stated that I think the only system that MIGHT outsell its previous generation will be the PS4/PS3. The only reason the PS4 might do this is because of the black eyes that Sony got early with the PS3 (between a madly high price point, a less compelling online service than Xbox Live, and the repeated hacks and outages on PSN) caused the PS3 to take a while to gain traction. This generation the PS4 is coming out the gate swinging. Now, I don’t think Sony will ever outsell their own PS2, Microsoft will never outsell the Xbox 360, and I only see one path for Nintendo to outsell the Wii or DS (but only technically). If Nintendo does basically create the “Nintendo Fusion” (a single platform that is both their home console and portable) they could outsell either the Wii or the DS, but not both, which would be the better comparison.

Lewis, I didn’t think about Platinum doing Kid Icarus, but I think that would really work! (I was actually thinking the team at Capcom responsible for DMC.) Also, while it might be “cheating,” I have to say I would love to see the Zelda X Fire Emblem, and it makes me wonder why Nintendo hasn’t done any crossovers with their own IPs (and Super Smash Bros doesn’t count, as it is not basically any one style of their games with characters from another). I personally think the Metroid/StarFox crossover could’ve been cool.

  2. Lewis I tried to shoot you an email this morning, but Google said outlook couldn’t get it. Very strange.

  3. There IS a level up system in Monster Hunter, but until you get to HR 8 you don’t see it. But it doesn’t make your character any stronger.

  4. welcome to the world of Monster Hunter! My advice would be to play online. You can customize what your targets are so it makes it easy to join with other players who are at your same skill level. This will make playing the story mode a lot easier.
Here’s my question. If you could only have it on one system what would it be? 3ds or wii u?

  5. @Wii Bert

Wii U, easily. It’s hard to see what’s going on and to read the text on the 3DS version. Not to mention I don’t have a circle pad pro, so controlling it is also very difficult on the 3DS.

  6. I’m surprised you seemed so lukewarm on DKTF. If you own a Wii U, why wouldn’t you be excited about that game? With so few game options I’d think almost all owners would be on this. And it looks like a good game…

I like the Mario/Sonic “true” crossover idea. Sonic games are maddeningly inconsistent, so I gave up on them years ago. But if Nintendo were to make the game from ground up it would likely be great.

Or what if Sonic was the 4th character option on Mario Bros? I mean, who wants to play as Toad anyway. I’d think that would generate a lot of interest.

  7. I’m just easily frustrated is all. I might not admit that if I was a better liar ;). I do like a lot of challenging games, but I dunno…the challenges in Donkey Kong Country Returns just got to me in the most annoying way, which is funny because I’m a huge fan of the original DKC games (1 and 2 anyway; didn’t get into 3 much). I love the original mine cart levels: I hate the new ones (as an example).

  8. Lol – extra points for honesty!

Did you play by yourself, or did you have someone to help as Diddy? Some levels are easier if someone is the helper, but most are easier if you control all the action. You get the extra hearts plus you can float.

Mine carts and that annoying rocket just take patience. In some cases, LOTS of patience.

I would say from the video I saw, this one could be harder.

  9. Yes the circle pad pro makes it a lot easier, but having a fireball come at you in 3D is awesome!

  10. @Lou: I rarely played with a buddy. Maybe that’s why I didn’t like it…? Haha! Also, I agree when you say TF looks harder than Returns from the trailers. The dynamic cameras are supposed to be a big draw, but it just makes the game look harder to me.

@Wii Bert: I haven’t even tried the game in 3D yet. I tend not to have the 3D on in general, but I’ll have to give it a shot in Monster Hunter. 🙂

  11. The 3D intro to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is amazing.
