    The Legend of Zelda came out in 1986. Final Fantasy was released in December 1987, which was still almost a full year after Zelda II which came out in January of that same year. The Legend of Zelda’s genre has pretty much always been action-adventure with the exception of Zelda II, which incorporated RPG elements such as leveling up.

    Super Smash Bros. Combo – Inside scoop.

  4. Another great JRPG is the RPG inside the Retro Game Challenge. It’s a quick and easy JRPG i hate jRPG’s but this one is very nice. I think that retro fans like the Infendo readers are they all like the game Retro Game Challenge (DS) i realy recoment is… The main game and the JRPG…

    First, both of you, see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, NOW. It was one of the best movies of 2010. The entire franchise is amazing: the movie, the soundtrack, the manga, and the game. All excellent.

    Secondly, about Zelda (and why people think/call it an action RPG). You were 95% right about people calling it one because of the literal interpretation that you are playing a role, but you forgot about one thing: Link does improve (“level-up”) over the course of the game by getting more hearts as the game goes. This is a VERY MINOR RPG element, but something so simple is what makes this different from just action adventure and makes people call it an action RPG (does Lara ever get mor health in Tomb Raider?).

    I think what makes people consider Zelda within RPG realms is the scope of the story and the adventure. That kind of quest is rarely seen outside RPG games, and it’s a fantasy world with quests, characters, personal progression, and impressive boss battles. It’s not turned based, or has level grinding, but those elements are part of the a niche of RPG’s as well. For example, western RPG’s like the Bioware games are mostly action romps without any turned based system.

    Scott Pilgrim was an excellent movie, even without the video game references.

    Everyone owes it to themselves to see it! Also, it would be great if the movie didn’t tank at the box office…

    @Kaiser Soze

    “Super Smash Bros. Combo รขโ‚ฌโ€œ Inside scoop” …?? Care to elaborate?

    Smash Bros. Brouhaha just doesn’t sound right. Unless anyone else can come up with a better name, I would like it to be called Smash Bros. 4. It’s straightforward and easy to remember.

    Super Smash Bros. Unleashed – calling it

    Great podcast, good to see you found your big boy pants again. ๐Ÿ™‚ lol Hopefully 3ds picks up steam soon, gettin’ kinda dusty over here! Also, Let’s Golf 3d is pretty good, you can level up your power/accuracy..etc, and it looks decent enough! 3d really does make things better.

    Loved this podcast. The thing that really struck a chord with me was the term “Cas-Core” That is totally me. That’s not to say I don’t love a big adventure RPG game, because i do, but I don’t have the time to be playing many of these at all. I have heaps i haven’t even started on my DS yet.

    Anyway it was great to see some RPG love. Even though I don’t agree that turn based RPG’s are rubbish and silly. I personally would prefer that over action RPGs or even Zelda type gameplay when the battle system is interesting but each to their own.

    Thanks for the memories, Blake! I have been a reader since your site’s first year, and I’d say that, in general, it keeps getting better (specially the podcast!)!

    One thing I do miss, however, is the first version of the Forums. That was a great source of gaming news from readers that covered the smaller stuff that was typically missed in the general blog. And, it was very easy to search through. Oh, well, maybe it was too resource-sucking to supervise those forums…

    And, in answer to your question, I always listen to the podcast on my way to work in my car, although sometimes I end up listening to the rest at my desk (with headphones).

    I found the perfect JRPG you guys would enjoy!! Try Ys Seven on the PSP. Its 15$ on amazon. I think you would like it because its a super fast real time action RPG. Its kinda like Zelda with RPG elements. Plus the controls are so tight and responsive.
