Chrono Trigger Ressurection

[Note: Picture of Guardia is from an unofficial and canceled remake of chrono trigger]

With all these Final Fantasy remakes hitting the DS the time of Chrono Trigger might be upon us. As of right now there is a rumor spreading across the internet of a possible “Remake” of Chrono Trigger in the works by square and we can only hope it is a slightly graphically improved version. The rumor surfaced with a certain picture…

Jump Magizine

This picture or scan is reportedly from Jump Magazine, and first showed up on the 2channel boards. 2channel is a japanese internet forum thought to be the largest Internet forum in the world. So rumors, fakes, and creditable information has been known to come from here from time to time.

According to the picture above the remake is set to hit Japan in December of this year, which is only a half a year away. Who knows, with E3 right around the corner we might even see an announcement for this or even maybe a little more from the Chrono series.

A website link revealed that Square Enix has put up a teaser site already for Chrono Trigger using the same clock sound from the SNES game. Everyone Rejoice, the Chrono Trigger is upon us…

    It is not a rumor.

    1. http://www.square-enix.co.jp/ctds/ A countdown using the sound effect as the clock in chrono trigger. Note the URL: CTDS (Chrono trigger DS)

    2.http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos/20080701_358725.jpg A scan features it.

It’s too good to be false.

    :groan:

-.- I rather have this on VC.

  3. Andrew G. says...

    @Atlantis 1982: That’s kind of ungrateful, really…

Anyway, I’ve never played Chrono Trigger before, but I’m glad to hear this for the fans’ sake!

There are few games that I feel like I have to get. If this turns out to be true (which it seems to be), than this will definitely qualify as a must get game.
One of the best games ever made for any system.

  5. Purple Chimp says...

Definitely a classic, but i am getting sick of remakes. :S

I want new good games for the DS or Wii.

    Please try harder someone!

Still, its a very good game.

  6. Guch says...

    =D

Can this be true? Can this be real? How can I put into words what I feel?

I agree with Atlantis1982: seeing this game on Virtual Console would be my preference. Still, I’ll happily take whatever Square is willing to give in this case - ChronoTrigger is long due for re-release!

(Also, I’m not sure that we should be “grateful” to Square regardless of what format they choose. They are releasing this game because it will be profitable for them, and releasing it on DS because that gives them more control over the pricing and profits. They are not releasing the game as a favor to us.)

This scares the hell out of me, Chrono Trigger doesn’t /need/ a remake, it was perfect in it’s original incarnation and a remake is an insult to the work gone into it… and there are so many ways they could break the game by remaking it, especially since squareenix is /not/ squaresoft, much like the rare MS bought is not th rare N64 gamers knew.

The original should be brought to the VC instead, and finally released in Europe.

What’s with all the big game announcements the past couple weeks? I thought E3 was on life-support!

I personally, am exited about all these games coming out.

Remakes of Kirby Super Star/Chrono Trigger for the DS? Score!

More Wario Land? It’s gotta be better than that lousy “Master of Disguise” game!

    Mega Man 9? Diablo 3?
    ….
    ………
    …………..

    ACK! *heart attack sound*

This is great for me, I missed Chrono Trigger the first 2 times around. With all these great new games and remakes of awesome old ones on the DS, it is shaping up to being my favourite console.

  11. Soup says...

the scuttlebutt I’ve heard pegs it as more of a port than a remake, keeping the same 2d graphics and dropping in additional content without overhauling the engine. Either way, as long as Chrono doesn’t speak…

  12. Clonester says...

OMG!!! This is so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 That 3D Guardia looks so beautiful! I’m so pumped for this (in case you can’t tell)!!!

  13. Clonester says...

I just realized that picture of Guardia isn’t official for the DS version. But if it looks like that I will be very happy.

  14. Scott Clements says...

I hope Soup is right and it is more of a port than a full on remake. I’m not the biggest RPG fan, but this is so highly regarded that I’ve always meant to play it, and if it were to be remade vastly different from the original then i’d probably end up playing both out of curiosity (although seeing as Square never deemed to release it in my homeland, I’d be playing it on an emulator and not feeling the slightest bit guilty about it)

and if (when) it sells well, you can bet some sort of sequel will follow

  15. Damien says...

I am honestly very excited about this announcement, the only thing I am afraid of is that they will port the PS1 version and have it lagging terribly on the DS. I don’t even want to think about the outrage that would cause… I also don’t want to see the added animated cut scenes disappear they were really fantastic, I’m torn by this. I want a remake, but not a shoddy one.

A new dungeon? I’m more interested in how wireless play’ll work, though..

  17. Telythugy says...

please… please… please let this be true. I love my emulated version of this game, but a DS version would be killer. Wii would be better, but I will take what I can get.

  18. greatslack says...

@Damien, we most likely won’t be seeing the PS1 lagging on the DS version. That came from CD loading times, and the DS carts are flash-based, so it should be as snappy as the original.

  19. Atlantis1982 says...

    @Andrew G

Oh, paying 40.00 than 800-1000 Wii points is more grateful? Seriously, this isn’t surprising that once again Square would rather milk this out.

  20. Will says...

Square has always been one to milk a series for the money, and they never really seem to care about their fans.
