Review: SteamWorld worth digging into your wallet

Retro-inspired platformers have taken the eshop by storm the past couple of years. Games like Mutant Mudds, Gunman Clive and the critically acclaimed Shovel Knight have all sold well and received glowing reviews. Another game inspired by the 8-bit and 16-bit era of gaming is Image & Form’s SteamWorld Dig, a highly addictive mining adventure. Regularly priced just under $9, the game is cu...

Bravely Default’s success could help return Final Fantasy to it’s roots

With over 1 million copies sold worldwide, over 600,000 outside of Japan, Bravely Default’s success may have slapped some sense into the people at Square Enix. The company well known for some of the greatest RPGs of the SNES era, had seemingly lost the plot as of late, particularly with the extremely popular Final Fantasy series. Having veered away from the traditional Japanese RPG model, re...

Review: Biogenik battery – Less of a savior, more of a backup plan

Every battery has a life cycle. Even rechargeable batteries start to lose their charge over time, and, while they will continue to function, their power will diminish. While most products can be recharged approximately 500 times before they begin to diminish, others will begin so slowly charge less and less, coming to a complete end at 500 charges. One of the major complaints revolving arou...

Alternate Timeline: the Nintendo and Sony partnership

What if Nintendo and Sony had a successful partnership instead of the tale of broken agreements and the creation of Nintendo’s most successful competitor that most of us are aware of? For those who are not let’s take a journey back to 1988. A Sony engineer named Ken Kutaragi wanted to strengthen the partnership with Nintendo after Sony agreed to create a custom sound chip for the SNES ...

Weekend Discussion: 90’s Nintendo

I know that I have not posted here in a while.  However, I saw this advertisement today and thought it would be a great discussion topic. Branding is an important aspect of any company.  When we see golden Arches, we can almost taste the fries that are fried within the establishment without stepping inside.  Nintendo’s logo once had that same appeal to a majority of the gamers out there.  Su...

Kickstarter Alert: ‘NES” by Richie Palys

I am a sucker for video game music, even those of the early beginnings that seem more like beeps and boops compared to today’ symphonies.  In my younger years, I could imagine the Mario Bros. or Zelda musical scores as so much more than they were.  So much so, that I actually heard them different in my head that they were actually playing out through my television speakers.  I was alw...

Nintendo of Europe announces Mario Kart 8 bundle

Nintendo of Europe announced a limited edition Mario Kart 8 software bundle for release this spring. The bundle includes a spiky blue shell collectible and a copy of Mario Kart 8. Europeans can buy the set when the game releases on May 30. No word yet on a U.S release, but don’t be too surprised when Nintendo spills the beans.   Source: Nintendo via Joystiq

Which genre could Nintendo use for their next IP?

Nintendo is ubiquitous with platformers (there’s no getting around it) and they have most of the other genres covered, such as the RTS (Pikmen) and RPG (Mario & Luigi series). But there are a few genres which are under represented by Nintendo such as an old school point and click adventure or a top-down hack and slash in the vein of Diablo in which item management could be made a lot sim...
