If the WiiWare port of Cave Story was 2.5D

I am a real big fan of playing side scrolling games, but when I see a nice looking render of a two dimensional character; I can’t help but squeal with excitement. The only real disappointing fact about this image, is that it was made by a fan of the game. So any chance of this render being used officially is almost impossible. That is unless someone like Nicalis or Pixel decide otherwise. It is still a very impressive render, and it is really cool to see a great character take a three dimensional form.

I would like to pose this question to you, which do you prefer 3D games or 2D games?

  1. i’ve seen this b4 and i like it but if the wii version of cave story was gonna be 2.5D i be less inclined to buy it

    i like both 2D and 3D games but i have more favs that are 2D
    for example i like all the metroid games but i like the ones that were in 2D more cause i found them more enjoyable

  2. The render is so painfully anime. It hurts.

    But yeah, I prefer 2D to 3D. One of the reasons I bought an X-Arcade stick.

    Duh, what are your expectations for a Cave Story model?

    For the poll, I enjoy both, as long as the art direction and implementation is good.

  5. Well I prefer different dimensions for different genres. For puzzle/fighting games, like handheld Zelda games, probably 2D. For beat ’em ups that are done Viewtiful Joe-style, 2.5D works. Platforming is probably left to 3D. But it’s very hard to really pigeon-hole these dimensions to genres, because if the gameplay is done right, pretty much everything is enjoyable.

  6. 3D for the sake of 3D in the case of what this “remake” would do is pointless. At least something like Bionic Commando had the excuse of using the same engine as the full-on 3D game as well as using that for its physics to revamp the gameplay a little.

    2D is still perfectly viable and I rather prefer the current “remake” of cave story with more detailed sprites as opposed to “now in 3D!” as has become the norm in the industry.

    As the Megaman 9 team said, it’s now more of a style choice than anything else. Not to take away from this fan’s work but that’s not a drool-worthy style, I’d pick even the older sprites over this. (FYI, I’m not a diehard fan of CS seeing as how I’ve never played it).

  7. I see the benefits of both types. For platformers, I almost prefer 2D. Sans Mario 64, most of my favorite platform games are from the NES and SNES.

  8. Whichever suits the game. 3d for the sake of 3d is pointless, but if devs started making major 2d console releases (not just VC or XBLA or whatever) a priority, the kiddies would feel ripped off.

    I agree with you absolutely, while some games would benefit from 2.5D/3D remake (Say Sonic 2), Cave Story is not one of them. I do find this version of Quote slightly disturbing. Also, seeing how the original game is freeware, I heartily encourage you to try it.

  10. i’d say 2d games are usuaully more to my tast since most 2d games have a good story to them and i like the games that have storys and since games are 2d or 2.5d they must have a good story or they wont sell and that is why chrono trigger and the world ends with you are great games. they have great battel systems and they have an amazing story to them and i like storys better then game play… by teh way what games have great storys

  12. I prefer 3D, but in many cases, especially on portable devices, I prefer 2.5D over 3D.
