Donkey Kong escaped from the Circus?

Infendo

My friend sent me this video today telling me “It’s on like Donkey Kong!” Strangely enough I have never ever seen this video before.

According the description on the youtube channel, “Donkey Kong has escaped from the circus. He is on the lam, and Mario and Pauline, portrayed here as Mario’s “niece”, are chasing the ape. As with the original game, Donkey Kong will often grab Pauline and Mario has to save her. (It must be noted that Pauline’s portrayal as Mario’s niece is an original Ruby-Spears concept. It is not a part of Nintendo’s official canon.)

I have never seen this video, have any of you ever watched this or seen it?

  1. OMG! Yeah, I remember this.

Cartoons like this, I think was on CBS Saturday Morning, in a block of other video game related cartoons. I remember Kangaroo and Q*Bert being in there as well. I think the Pac-Man cartoons was done separately from this. These would have been maybe 1984 or 1985.

  2. I remember watching this on Saturday mornings. I just can’t believe the voice of Donkey Kong was done by Soupy Sales!!

What an odd show, Saturday Supercade .. it featured Frogger, Kangaroo, Pitfall, and Q-bert, too. Most of these were each from a different game company. Quite the feat of licensing!

  3. I watched this all the time in the 80’s. Also, the Pac-Man and Dragon’s Lair cartoons.

  4. Oh god. Ruby-Spears? They’re just awful. Look at what they did to Mega Man.

    Come on this was cool!

  6. That cartoon was closer to Miyamoto’s original vision of the Donkey Kong characters and setting than any of the Mario VS. Donkey Kong games.

  7. Never seen this before.

  8. I love the 1920s feel to the original Donkey Kong art.

  9. seriously, seeing that video makes me feel like i’m 5 again. the second it started i was taken back to saturday morning in my pajamas. i had totally forgotten about this cartoon block. i can’t believe they actually tried to make a show around q-bert. @ doc octorok good call on the dragon’s lair cartoon that brings back memories too. when i was younger i didn’t realize it started as a video game. so when i saw the game years later i was like “hey i remember that cartoon” and my buddy had to explain its history. aaahhh the 80’s
