Can Nintendo really turn Wii U fortunes around with just a single game release?

A few days ago Satoru Iwata stated in an Investors Q & A session that “The fate of a video game system is often influenced greatly by the introduction of a single title.” He supported this by using Pokemon as an example. When the Game Boy sales were slowing down and the first entry into the now world famous Pokemon franchise rocketed the popularity of the Game Boy into the stratosphere.

However, that was like capturing lightning in a bottle and that is going to be nigh on impossible to replicate. I’m sure that another franchise will appear and take our gaming world by storm, but the games that we currently know about do not seem to possess that quality. Mario Kart 8 will boost Wii U sales, but not enough to turn the Wii U into a success overnight. The only potential game that can rival the impact of Pokemon is a brand new IP from Miyamoto, which will hopefully be revealed at E3 which is now only three weeks away.
