Rumor: Metroid Title Headed to 3DS

So I hear a 3D Metroid title could very well be coming to the Nintendo 3DS. This is great news! So long as it’s nothing like Other M.

Confirmation will probably come at the big North America/UK 3DS event scheduled for this Wednesday, at which point we’ll know pricing, availability and launch titles. Should be a hoot, although shelling out $300 for a portable will not be. Let’s hope that’s not what happens.

As an aside, history shows us that 2D platformers like New Super Mario Bros. do incredibly well on a portable platform. We have no idea if a Metroid title is actually coming to the 3DS, let along what it might look like, but for me this style seems the perfect fit. And who knows? A well-executed 2D Metroid, coupled with some clever stereoscopic 3D, might be just what the franchise needs to wash away the undeniable taint of Other M.

Jack, why all the hate on Other M? Oh ya, cause it sucked.

  2. Chelsea says:

It sucked for a Metroid game. It would’ve been OK under any other name. The Metroid Prime trilogy is a hard act to follow.

Unfortunately, I was not a fan of Metroid Prime: Hunters on DS. I found the FPS controls with the stylus cumbersome and annoying. I imagine this won’t be too different on 3DS. 🙁

  3. Blake says:

I liked Hunters on DS, Chelsea. And I’m always right about these kinds of things! 🙂

Metroid Prime Hunters DS was a BEAST!!!!!!! I would love a sequel.

  5. Joey Boots says:

No story. Here is the exchange that caused this:

Person 1: “It’s absolutely fine, I don’t expect you to spill anything, it’s nice to have a surprise. I have my fingers crossed for Metroid..”

Person 2: “I think you’re going to be pleased then…”

Person 2 was responding to the first sentence in person 1’s tweet.

metriod prime hunters was/is my favorite ds multilayer game. story mode was okay but could be better aka could have had more than 2 different bosses

I was dissappointed with Hunters (in fact I’d probably rate it below where I put Other M). What I’d love to see would be a kick-ass side scroller Metroid on the 3DS (just look at Nintendo’s recent magic with Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby’s Epic Yarn). The paralaxing effect in the environments would be so cool looking, and you could have the multiple depth levels like DKCR to really fatten up the environments and gameplay. And for the love of all that is holy, no dialogues or monologues. I didn’t like any of it in Fusion, certainly none of it in Other M, and I didn’t even like the intro to Super Metroid (the game itself was nearly perfect, but the intro just wasn’t very interesting). If anything, I think something that lands between Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Prime (as far as game design is concerned, I mean) would be fantastic.

  8. Dan says:

I’m also in the camp hoping for a side scroller. The controls for Hunters sucked.

  9. Josh says:

I liked Hunters a lot… except for the stupid repetitive boss fights that also made your hand fall off. They ruined the game.

  10. X says:

None of you have ever used a Thumb strap…. the fps experience on hunters was so much better than most pc fps. With a stylus on the other hand, ya that sucked

I think Metroid is the unique tittle Nintendo could reserve to the mature audience at the present and I believe that what made New Super Mario Bros or DKC Returs or yet Kirby´s EY couldn´t be used as a reference for a new game of the species of Metroid.

Metroid Prime series and even Hunters are on the right direction and they´re the best reference to be taken. The fault of Other M is in the fact that it was built to satisfy the vanity of its producers instead of continue the good work made by Retro Studios and the avidity of everyone who have fun playing Mario or DKC but expects to play Metroid in a complete different way.

I still have one from my DS phat but none of DS’ since lite have them. I have no idea why it was a great accessory.

I think that it will be a Prime like game, but I hope I’m wrong. That game was baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad

  14. Jeff says:

Actually I hope that it has a lot in common with Other M. Other than the fact the story was a tad long-winded at times, it played exactly like a Metroid sequel should, and is classic in every sense of the word. It really makes me wonder if the people who rag on the game the most actually played the game or just like whining and bitching. Or if the “wound” of being butthurt about “betrayal” is more useful than highlighting the universally positive aspects of the game and hoping that those parts stay.

The game it should really try to avoid being is Metroid Prime. Not because those are bad games, but the way the 3DS is laid out it just wouldn’t lend itself to such games. Also Retro probably won’t be on hand to do it, considering they lost the senior staff responsible for most of Metroid Prime’s memorable moments.

Actually, the game it should try to avoid being like most is Metroid Prime Hunters. Nintendo listened to the masses and the back-to-basics Malstromites and made a pure action game devoid of plot exposition and was intensely focused on FPS action. It is currently the worst selling of the entire series.

Of course the curious part is all of the new Metroid “experts” pretending like this game never existed, which is understandable, because it is very forgettable. And I believe Malstrom said it best that, whatever you do, if you create a positive reaction, then you have done something right. And if you create a negative reaction, then you have also done something right. Only when you get no reaction have you erred in your plan.

The controls on hunters were’nt that bad

It could always be a VC announcement anyway…

  16. EdEN says:

Other M is very fun. Dove into it for a couple of hours and don’t see what all the problem is about the “controls”. I would like there to be Nunchuck support for a sequel but other than that I can defeat enemies, obtain energy tanks and missiles and defeat bosses just fine.

Update!: No new metroid game, Samus and Ridley making a cameo in Dead or Alive Demensions….
