Review: Dead Space extracts thrills on Wii

Their eyes void of conscience and decaying skin dangling from their torsos like sagging drapes, they’re known as Necromorphs. They’re basically mutated space zombies, and your mission is to kill them.

Lots of them.

As did the original Dead Space, however, Extraction distinguishes itself from its zombie-shooting brethren with a unique combat focus all its own’sadistic, blood-soaked, cringe-inducing dismemberment. The Necromorph is impervious to body shots, but its long, claw-like limbs are ideal candidates for removal courtesy a weapon like your plasma cutter. Amputate their limbs, and the creatures inevitably collapse, a sickening heap of arms, legs and sanguinary sludge.

Extraction doesn’t feature the fear-relieving corpse stomp of the original game, but picking off Necromorph limbs is as satisfying as ever, and thanks to the Wii Remote, it’s surgically precise.

No anesthesia required.

“Caution” may criminally understate the peril of your present predicament

To assuage the monotony of blowing off space-zombie appendages, the game peppers interesting new elements throughout the duration of the experience. You might need to weld a door closed to prevent a Necromorph attack or hack a broken security panel to open another door and escape, all the while fending off those disturbing beasts.

And if weapons aren’t your thing, you can heave explosive barrels at them with your Jedi-like stasis ability. The Force is strong with you.
