Last November, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime predicted that New Super Mario Bros Wii would outsell the 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 by January. “Absolutely. I say that unequivocally,” he said at the time. It didn’t happen, reports 1up.
Since its release, Modern Warfare 2 has amassed a sales total of 6,156,700 on the 360 in the United States, according to the NPD Group, compared with 4,866,700 copies of New Super Mario Bros. Wii for the same period. The astonishing 4.2 million copies of MW2 that were sold back in November were simply too much for Nintendo’s mascot to overcome.
There’s a bit of saving grace for Reggie, however. Give it another month or two, and the evergreen Mario will surely outsell Modern Warfare 2. For sure by the middle of the year.
