Ocarina of Time Remake Rumor Sounds Familiar…

Canada’s Gamefocus is claiming that one of their Japanese Nintendo buddies let it slip that Nintendo is working on a Wii remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time:

Late last night, our Japanese contact over at Nintendo sent us word about something really exciting: a Wii remake of the one of the greatest N64 games ever produced: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. We were also told that an official announcement would be made around April 5, which is the North American launch of the Nintendo DSi.

Supposedly the official announcement is going to be made this coming Sunday.  Although many gaming news outlets suspect this to be an early April Fools joke or a crossed wire, Nintendo has kicked this idea around before.  In 2005, Iwata told Electronic Gaming Monthly that they were looking into giving some classic games a graphics overhaul for the upcoming “Revolution” console’s download service.

We are doing several experiments, including working with the original Super Mario Bros., with the new technology,” said Iwata. “The game itself and the gameplay shall be identical, but the look will be different; it’s possible that with Revolution, we may be able to see the old games with new looks.

Although this sort of remake seems like an unlikely move today, at least we know it’s something they’ve considered in the past.
