Miyamoto Jealous That He Didn’t Invent Angry Birds, Maybe a Time Machine Will Be His Next Project?

Shigeru Miyamoto has a lot to be proud of.  He created some of the most beloved video game characters in the universe, yet he has one regret.  He wishes that he had invented Angry Birds.  How can such a simplistic mobile game create a hint of jealousy when you are the father of such iconic characters such as Zelda/Link, Donkey Kong and Mario?

Now Miyamoto did not actually say the word “jealous”, however you do not need to be psychic to see it in his quote below.

Miyamoto had this to say:

“Angry Birds is a very simple idea but it’s one of those games that I immediately appreciated when I first started playing, before wishing that I had been the one to come up with the idea first. I mean, obviously I want to be the one creating the most convincing, surprising game ideas.”

I agree that Angry Birds is addicting, fun and brilliant.  I am guilty of downloading each incarnation of the series and playing it until my touch screen shows lines of wear.  As I was reading up on Miyamoto’s borderline jealousy of the game, I could picture him building a real life Mario’s Time Machine just to travel back and create the game first.  I have a feeling that Miyamoto’s love for the feathery projectiles will, no doubt, inspire a new game or character in the future.

How do you feel Angry Bird’s would differ if Miyamoto was the creator and how would the birds fit into the Smash Bros. Series?

  1. i dont understand angry birds. it is a 2d boom blox right? angry birds in space is cool because of the gravity effect

  2. Don’f forget there are lots of people, like myself, who think Angry Birds is stupid, boring, and a total waste of time. (Also, the guys from Angry Birds didn’t come up with any original idea, but that’s another story.)

I still have to try Angry Birds Space, it looks way better than the original.

  3. Yes, Angry Birds plays a lot like 2D Boom Blox.

And, if Miyamoto had invented the game, the birds would have mustaches and the level designs would be considerably more imaginative. And the music would be a lot more fun. And the cartridge would have cost $39.99, but would have been worth every penny. And there’d be no paid DLC.

  4. @Richard…I think your comment wins, hands down!

  5. Angry Birds is nothing special; nothing at all. I don’t know why the world has gone insane over it. Is it because it’s just about the only game that seems to work perfectly on the Android platform? Is it because there aren’t enough great game choices for tablets?

  6. Richard wins the internet today. 🙂 You also forgot to mention that he’d have made it multiplayer as well. You each build your own fort, then take turns destroying it! I kinda like angry birds, for the first 10 levels, but it’s to repetitive and boring to keep me entertained. (Haven’t tried in Space, since my old iTouch 2g can’t play it. :/)

  7. angry birds can not stand up to the likes of ‘iconic characters such as Zelda/Link, Donkey Kong and Mario’ there simply is no comparison

  8. Angry Birds deserves all of the praise and success it’s got. It’s simple addictive fun that is easy to pick up and play. It is no less a “real” game than Tetris or Pushmo.

  9. Miyamoto shouldn’t be jealous. It’s pretty well known that Angry Birds borrows heavily from PC based flash games, most notably Crush the Castle. It’s available online and the similarities are pretty striking. IMO Angry Birds is fun but it doesn’t hold a candle to the games that Nintendo has produced.

  10. I tried Angry Birds once and didn’t find it even remotely fun. It was mostly boring and a tiny bit frustrating.

But I played an online multiplayer flash game where you have two teams throwing snowballs at each other. That was awesome.

  11. I don’t understand all of this Angry Birds hate. Sure I’ve played it an it may not be my cup of tea, but it’s not “stupid” nor is it “dumb”. I bet the majority of you who said these things would probably download Angry Birds 3D when it comes out on the eShop this year….

  12. While I think Angry Birds is a perfectly decent game (and when I played it myself, was kind of fun), people really like to think it’s a far bigger deal than it really is. Remember that people are only paying a small amount of money (or even none at all) to play the game. Meanwhile, every sale that say, Mario has was at about fifty dollars a game, hence people value the series much more than Angry Birds by definition. Would people pay that much to play Angry Birds?

But hey, if Miyamoto wishes he’d have been the one who originally made the game, good for him I guess.
