Online gaming giant GameSpot has revealed their choice as the best overall game for the year 2013, and the honor goes to Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for 3DS. The handheld game was competing against the likes of The Last of Us (PS3 game of the year), Super Mario 3D World (Wii U game of the year) and Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360 game of the year), but came out on top:
A Link Between Worlds is fantastic in its own right. It frees you of any tutorial shackles and sets you loose in a bustling world with only your own curiosity to guide you. Such unrestrained exploration is empowering.
GameSpot infamously awarded The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword a 7.5/10 score back in 2011, criticizing the game’s inability to truly change up the familiar Zelda formula. However, the site’s review for A Link Between Worlds was given a loftier 9/10 score back in November, praising the new rental system, which gives the player more freedom over their quest.
It’s great to see a Nintendo game win such a prestigious award. Do you think A Link Between Worlds deserves the honor, especially considering it won out over Nintendo’s other big first party game of the year, Super Mario 3D World?
