Online gaming giant GameSpot has revealed their choice as the best overall game for the year 2013, and the honor goes to Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for 3DS. The handheld game was competing against the likes of The Last of Us (PS3 game of the year), Super Mario 3D World (Wii U game of the year) and Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360 game of the year), but came out on top:
A Link Between Worlds is fantastic in its own right. It frees you of any tutorial shackles and sets you loose in a bustling world with only your own curiosity to guide you. Such unrestrained exploration is empowering.
GameSpot infamously awarded The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword a 7.5/10 score back in 2011, criticizing the game’s inability to truly change up the familiar Zelda formula. However, the site’s review for A Link Between Worlds was given a loftier 9/10 score back in November, praising the new rental system, which gives the player more freedom over their quest.
It’s great to see a Nintendo game win such a prestigious award. Do you think A Link Between Worlds deserves the honor, especially considering it won out over Nintendo’s other big first party game of the year, Super Mario 3D World?

Wow that’s impressive…that reminds me I need to get back into that game…dam you animal crossing addiction.

So far really enjoying the game I’ve just reached the 2nd dungeon and I’m glad to be playing it on the limited edition 3ds XL :). My one compliant is I’ve switched off the 3d effect I’m curious who else plays this way and with most of the Nintendo video being released as 2d only I see why they made the 2ds which makes me think I won’t be using the 3d much going forword
Holly
@Greg In Pa So I gather you’re new to the 3DS? Well, you’re first impressions of the 3-D effect are spot-on in my book. I kept the effect on through much of A Link Between Worlds because it’s a really smooth-running game even in 3-D. But most games take on a fuzzy quality when I turn on the 3-D, so I usually don’t bother.

Inb4Lou says “it’s not as good as GTA V, it hasn’t sold anywhere near as many copies” like he did in the forums a long time ago as his counter-argument.
Lord Lemmy
Lol. But remember, Mike, Lou only hates Wii U. And Iwata.
And I think it makes sense for it to get game of the year!
Lou
MikeIsaPoet making a fool of himself as always. I’ve already praised this game many times, and have never praised GTA V. Just pointed out the sales numbers.
Quit with your straw man arguments. They’re not helping sell any more Wii U’s.
MikeIsaPoet
Where have you praised this game? I’ve never seen you talk anything but trash.
Lord Lemmy
To be fair, Mike, he’s NEVER ragged on 3DS or any games for 3DS. All his trash talking goes to Wii U and Iwata.
And Lou, no one’s trying to help sell Wii U’s here, so saying that at all was irrelevant. Besides, working at Best Buy, I’ve seen Wii U’s pick up in sales. Not to mention, this year’s going to have a LOT of good Wii U title’s coming out, which will only increase sales.
Lou
I’m not talking trash. Just stating facts. It’s been over a year now. It’s not going to take off. It’s a fanboy-only machine.
Those who keep pointing to Smash Bros should remember it will also launch on the 3DS, so once again Nintendo will be competing with itself, and the Wii U sales won’t be what you’re hoping for. It’s likely Nintendo knows they have to launch on 3DS to justify their investment. The install base of the Wii U just isn’t big enough.

“Fanboy-only machine.”
Uh huh.

I have owned every Zelda game since Wind Waker and for some reason I found ALBW to be very easy. Usually I need to look at an online guide at some point during a Zelda game but never had to in this and also I completed the game without ever dying. It was still really fun though.
Lou
ALBW was a little on the easy side, but like you said, still really fun.
I like games that let you warp back to the boss if you lose, which this game does feature. But the boss battles were pretty easy, so it didn’t really matter. Kind of odd.
Still, a great, addicting game that’s fun to play.
Lord Lemmy
A fanboy only machine? The people I’ve been seeing buy it at Best Buy, as of late, are families with small children. Those are definitely NOT fanboys.
john Turner
I really enjoyed ALBW, with it’s mixture of New Thinking and Unrestrained Exploration, with the Throwback Retro Appeal. But I’m not actually quite sure I’d say Game of the Year…
Holly Fellmeth
@John Turner It definitely makes Nintendo game of the year for me. Super Mario 3D World is great and all, but ALBW is even better in my book.
