Bill Trinen of the Nintendo Treehouse took us through a detailed tour of the tactical gameplay and characters in upcoming 3DS title Code Name S.T.E.A.M. Trinen warned players that the game will take tactical skill and wisdom to master. Steam is your most valuable resource in the game, but it’s limited. Using myriad characters, the player has the chance to form battle strategies for each stage, but only four characters can go into each mission. Overwatch is an important mechanic players need to consider. Using it causes a character to save steam for the enemy’s turn to interrupt, stun, and possibly end its turn early.
Four of the characters and their distinctive skills include:
Henry Fleming
Weapon: All-American Eagle Rifle – shoots 3 shots at a time
Special Attack: Eagle Strike – Henry throws an explosive eagle to deal lots of damage to enemies caught in the blast
Lion (of Oz, apparently)
Weapon: Lion Launcher – allows Lion to launch himself and damage enemies he lands on
Special Attack: Mighty Roar – both damages and stuns enemies surrounding Lion
Tiger Lilly (newly revealed)
Ammunition: Medi-mortar – heals allies that are within its blast radius
Special: Healing Wind – brings powerful healing effects to those who surround her
Tom Sawyer (newly revealed)
Weapon: Punch Gun – knocks enemies away and potentially stuns them
Special Attack: Hijinks – places land mines over the selected area
You can see now why tactical prowess will be needed in this game. As you progress, more characters will be unlockable, even Abe Lincoln himself. Are you ready to use characters’ abilities, overwatch, and each stage’s environment to save Earth from an alien invasion? Code Name S.T.E.A.M., currently in development by Intelligent Systems, will be released sometime in the Spring of 2015.
