Just in time for the launch of yet another Wii-Fi enabled title, Star Fox Command, Nintendo told us today that the two millionth unique subscriber has signed onto the service. No word was given on where that subscriber was located, so I’ll just have to keep this $1,000 Infendo prize check for myself.
In all seriousness though, this is a pretty important milestone for Nintendo, especially since this was its first real effort to get into the online world. I’d say two million people is a success no matter how you slice it. And to aid us in our awe of its new online prowess, Nintendo also gave a short geography lesson for comparitive purposes:
“To put that number in perspective, the population of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection users now surpasses the population of 15 different U.S. states, including Montana, Nebraska and New Mexico. In addition to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection surpassing 2 million unique players, the service has also logged more than 70 million individual game sessions in just more than nine months of operation.”
Truly, there is nothing more awe-inspiring than the populations of Montana and Nebraska…
While I was writing this I was trying to find XBox Live subscription numbers for a comparison, but came up empty. Anyone out there know how 2 million unique users for the DS compares to Live?
