GameCube: Death in the Shadow of Wii

The GameCube will die this year. Nintendo didn’t even bother showcasing the system or its upcoming releases at E3.

Months before its release, the launch (and post-launch) titles for Wii sound better than the bulk of what’s available for the five year old GameCube. Maybe it’s because of the new gameplay capabilites with the Wiimote, but I feel that the majority of GameCube titles pale in comparison to what the future brings for Wii. Sure, there are classic titles like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Zelda: The Wind Waker, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Resident Evil 4 that alone make the ‘Cube a worthwhile purchase. But in all honesty, I got a GameCube towards the end of its lifecycle and expected to reap the benefits of being a late adopter; cheap “greatest hits” and used titles. The more I look at the catalog of games available for the GameCube, the harder it is for me to get excited about buying, renting, or playing.

With only a few more exclusive titles on the horizon, 2006 is pretty much the end of the GameCube’s era. My question to you is, what games do you consider to be absolute must-play titles for the GameCube?
