Nintendo considering ways to connect the 3DS and the Wii U.

Shigeru Miyamoto, one of the leading video game developers working for Nintendo, says that the company is exploring the possibility of linking the 3DS handheld and the upcoming Wii U home console, but that this might only happen sometime after it is launched.

The game creator has spoken to IGN and has said that, “Of course we are thinking of the possibility of connecting Wii U and Nintendo 3DS once again. We have challenged connectivity on many occasions, and one of the great lessons we have learned is the simple fact that those who own both are much fewer than those who don’t own both.”
Nintendo is keen to make sure that all those who buy a Wii U have the same game play experience and bringing the 3DS into this equation might mean that some players feel abandoned because they don’t want to pick up the handheld. Another problem linked to connecting the 3DS and the Wii U might be that the number of screens that are involved is too big for the player to handle well. Miyamoto adds, “But of course we are trying to think about a way to expand the experience of 3DS and Wii U when they are connected with each other, one way or the other.” The Nintendo executive has made it clear that the connectivity will probably only happen a few years after the Wii U is launched. Soon after the new platform is introduced, the hardware team that’s in charge of it will have to focus on making sure that all its elements run perfectly and on optimizing the experience both for players and the developers. Nintendo has been traditionally cautions about adding more connectivity to its devices, but the company has pledged to change that with the Wii U, which will have a new network infrastructure designed to encourage interaction and multiplayer.
