One of the most interesting features of the 3DS is its ability to play 3D video content. In the US, the only 3D video content to be found was a trailer for Green Lantern and a video feature jumping dogs. That is all about to change.
Starting July 13 in Japan, Nintendo will be launching its 3DS Nintendo Video service, not to be confused with its own SpotPass TV which launched in late June. What’s the difference between the two? SpotPass TV offers original content which is updated daily by Fuji TV and Nippon TV out of Japan, while the Nintendo Video service will offers periodic releases of 2D and 3D content “recommended” by Nintendo.
Joystiq contacted Nintendo of America to find out when all of this fun content will be available stateside, and this is how they responded:
Nintendo’s short-form video service that delivers special video content for Nintendo 3DS systems will launch in North America later this summer. In addition, Netflix members who have an unlimited plan starting at $7.99 a month and access to a broadband wireless Internet connection will soon be able to download a free Netflix application that allows them to watch movies and TV shows on their Nintendo 3DS systems at no extra charge. Great to hear that Netflix is still in the works. Having the ability stream episodes of The Office on my train ride into town sounds terrific!
