So World of Goo is pretty much the greatest downloadable game ever

Portal-style writing + Fisher Price meets Tim Burton graphics + brilliant and varied gameplay + Danny Elfman-like music = something truly special. Agree? Disagree? Discuss.

Luckily I’m home sick, so I’ll be able to enjoy this one today!

pretty good game indeed… tryied the PC demo and it’s a lot of fun…reminds me lemmings as well as worms (2D) for visual style!

    sure wish I had 300 blocks free . . .

When I was watching the trailers for this game I asked myself if the trailer’s music was part of some movie magic or if it was the in game music? Thankfully it’s in game music. I love the game’s visual style, puzzles, and the painter’s signs; but the music there’s something about the game’s music score that I really like.

I think it looks great, if I hadn’t just bought 4 other games I’d of picked this up by now. Something to get during a lull.

I’m really curious about World of Goo, and very interested in the game - but it seems like “the greatest downloadable game” is coming out just about every second week these days.

Mega Man 9, Braid, Castle Crashers, and now World of Goo… Sometimes I worry that these games are simply “flavors of the week”, cute puzzles made to be consumed and then thrown away. This isn’t a bad thing in itself, as long as the game are fun while they last, but it’s making me jaded to these types of announcements.

Which of these games has any staying power? Is it really worth buying any of them, or am I better off saving money for games that can be played indefinitely (like the upcoming Tetris Party)?

Sigh. I’ll probably buy World of Goo anyway though. It does look entertaining, and I’m absolutely in love with the art style and music.

I wanna see gameplay footage of this game before I download it.

That dark goo looks disgusting though.

That’s the first level, to give you an idea. Probably the simplest level they could’ve come up with.

Agreed. I bought this game on Monday night, and it’s fantastic so far. Fairly simple game polished to perfection. Only complaint so far is that at times, when there are a bunch of goo balls in one place, it can be hard to select the one you want (as sometimes you want to grab a specific type). Other than that, it’s top notch. Everyone needs to pick this one up, not only to support great WiiWare games, but because it’s worth buying.

    Ejamer,

I hear you, but this is definitely more than the flavor of the week download. This game kicks the trash out of Mega Man 9, Braid, Castle Crashers, De Blob, you name it. Game of the year for me (unless something amazing arrives this holiday), indie download be damned.

It’s pretty much solidified now:World of Goo is a hit. This game came out of the blue, but it sure sounds like a winner. Definitely gonna pick it up soon.

While the gameplay and visual style are fantastic, I’m still blown away by the amazing music. How did such a small team pull this off?!

  16. Kannon says...

I’ll get it eventually. Right now I’m enjoyed the hell out of Cubello. Definitely a must if you’ve got six bucks lying around.

  17. GradiusFan says...

This is definately the best game I have played in a long time. It is simple to get the hang of and lots of fun to play. Has anyone tried multiplayer? How does that work? I love me some WOG but I am still pissed that tetris aint out yet.

  18. Hawkeye says...

Agreed. best DLC i’ve ever paid for. it’s definitely got the right stuff.

  19. Used Cisco says...

I would have bought this on Day 1 but my Wii is full. Once they open up the SD card, I’ll start buying again.

  20. EdEN says...

Looking forward to purchasing both Art Style games, both Strong bad episodes and World of Goo… plus DLC for My life as a King and Megaman 9 and 6 VC games. Right now between work, writing my Masters Degree Thesis and the fact that buying 5000 wii points costs 67 USD instead of the usual 53 USD (I live in Mexico and the Dollar went from 10.50 pesos per dollar to 13.5 pesos per dollar) and I need to purchase 10,000 Wii points for everything I want to buy.

I’ll have a lot of catching up to do in early December…

World of Goo is about the best use of $15 I’ve ever spent on a game. Some people are still saying it’s expensive, and yes, compared to some other Wii Ware titles it is, but for the quality of game it is a true bargain. This is a game I can see playing through and then going back and getting better times, or perfecting strategies. It has a timeless quality and I can definitely see this game becoming a classic, the graphics, sound, and controls are all so solid this title is an absolute gem.

  22. egag21 says...

It looks awesome. But best download ever? I just downloaded Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Isn’t that arguably the best game of all time? By the way, OOT was only $10 and WOG is $15? My game-buying dollars are limited these days, I’ll have to wait until I can afford/justify it. In the mean time, I’m jealous. It reminds me of Fantastic Contraption (http://fantasticcontraption.com).

  23. manosdvd says...

Great… I was trying to do something productive today but now you’ve reminded me and I have to go play again!!!!!

Still think Lost Winds is up there, plausibly on the same level except World of Goo does seem to have a slightly better replayability. Also, Mega Man 9 has to be considered for ranking, but I probably have to put it below the other two because it’s not quite original. Not sure if it’s a good or bad sign that my top 4/5 (depending if you count the Strong Bad episodes as separate games) games so far of 2008 are WiiWare. I predict Left4Dead will rank among my top choices and Wario Land still calls to me but I’m holding out for a price drop, but it’s definitely not looking good for retail right now.

  24. Nate says...

@manosdvd: Surely SSBB is on your list as well! And what about MKW?

  25. manosdvd says...

Good point… I forgot SSBB came out this year… though the WiiWare games still top it ultimately. It’s a game I’ll still be playing in 5 years, but unless I have friends over I don’t even pull it out (and lately Wii Fit has been my go-to game for friends… that’ll be in my top 10 too). Mario Kart (had to do some research to find what MKW was) I didn’t play much that wasn’t a little painful to play for some reason. The control just doesn’t feel crisp enough for my taste. I instead went and bought Mario Kart DS and was much happier. Not say MKW isn’t awesome, but it just didn’t really do it for me.

  26. ejamer says...

Ok, succumbed to the hype and gave this title a shot. Quick impressions:
+ tremendous art and music design, simple but very effective
+ level diversity is good so far (still too early to judge though)
    + controls are good
+ puzzles are suitably difficult, and ramp up nicely so far

So that’s a lot of good. I agree that the game is definitely worth $15… however, “game of the year” claims seem like a stretch to me.

The one thing that I do appreciate is how this game should have some replay value. Levels aren’t always the same twice, because a tower of goo tends to be less “cut and dried” than one might desire… so your results won’t always look the same. Each level also has a bonus OCD goal to accomplish that is usually much more challenging. Finally, you can also create freeform towers out of the extra goo collected, competing against clouds that indicate the height of other towers being built at the same time.

So this game might be another flavor of the week… but at least it’s a good flavor that won’t go stale after 3 or 4 hours of playtime.

  27. InvisibleMan says...

I got it on day 1, and I definitely have to put World of Goo all the way up there with Braid and Castle Crashers: these all tie up for me for “downloadables of the year”. Hey, at those prices, you can easily afford to get all three!

And, sorry to say this, but retro is overrated for me. These new games are instant classics!

Here’s a better video. Sorry, I don’t know how to do hyperlinks on these comments.

I love this game was looking forward to it since wiiware was announced. The wait was well worth I’m absolutely loving it. Goo is delicious.

  31. locoloco says...

I’ve had this installed on my pc for almost a week, and i have been able to play only one level. I thought it was pretty cool…it reminded me of some game…i cant recall the name of it…
Anyway, i hope to have some time this weekend to play with some goo. :)

  32. Paul 2 (since there is now more than one) says...

I think this is a really great game, but the lack of replayability worries me. Portal gave interesting challenges and downloadable maps, but I don’t think I ever want to replay at least half of these levels, but that could just be me.

Still, this is a game definitely worthy of a purchase, but it may be getting slightly overhyped.
