Red Steel 2 will use MotionPlus 1:1 controls

Monday, July 28th, 2008 at 7:50am by Jack

This will come as a surprise to no one, but Ubisoft has embraced Nintendo’s new MotionPlus technology and will use it in the sequel to Red Steel. Perhaps the 1:1 sword controls will make the game worth buying? I kid Ubisoft, honestly.

“Red Steel 2 has been in development for many months now, and this new device will help us be even more precise in what we do with the product,” said Alain Corre, Ubisoft’s executive director in an interview with GameIndustry.biz.

Imagine that. A developer that saw potential in the technology and decided to make money with it, instead of complaining about how Nintendo blindsided them at E3 with yet another accessory. Taking initiative and making a profit… It’s almost like that’s how it’s supposed to work.

While I agree with you in principle Jack, this is the kind of news that could have been mentioned at E3.

Didn’t need screen shots, a trailer, etc, etc… just some assurance that the MotionPlus would be used in an upcoming game in a cool way. Red Steel 2 would have been a great way to build some anticipation at E3 rather than a collective “so now what?”

Fill ‘XXXXXXX’ with anything Nintendo’s made since the DS and you pretty much have the mental state of the industry vs Nintendo and its never ending ignorance to opportunity.

Too bad it’s Ubisoft. It might not have been predestined to be awful, otherwise.

I would have bought this game anyway as I personally loved the original, sure it had it’s flaws but there aren’t many release titles that did truely rock, even zelda was just a port.
This just adds to my excitement about red steel 2. I say well done ubisoft for doing this even when nintendo are being idiots.

Yeah, I can’t wait ’til more games are announced for the MotionPlus, it sounds pretty awesome, like what the Wiimote was meant to be. But it’s still gonna be eons before any of the games come out, methinks, so I guess we have a while to dream, anyway…

    Oh great, MotionPluZZzzzz!

Nintendo stated that developers knew of the MotionPlus prior to E3, so who’s being less than truthful about this?

Many months… So, 2 years later and many months after UbiSoft received a massive Wii backlash, this game is announced. Good timing.

I’ll wait for the reviews and gauge development time as if this is a buy or not. If they only spend a year on this game, which seems like it will be the case, I’m not buying it. Red Steel was not only flawed with a super-tard-AI, the game looked absolutely awful, especially when compared to Cube games like Geist.

Some developers were informed about MotionPlus prio to its announcement.

Anyways, with UbiSoft many months into development of Red Steelz, I’m wondering what areas they’ll completely hack to make this game more casual…

I still say that Ubisoft owes us Red Steel 2 at a lower price to make up for their sins.

  9. ResidentialEvil says...

Well that’s great news, but how about this time making a game that doesn’t suck.

Bii, i was about to say the same. Its irritating that just because a few developers didnt know ahead of time, that people believe nintendo is lying.
That somehow, journalists know more then nintendo does about who knew what when. Nintendo cannot themselves announce stuff about games using WiiMotionPlus without developer consent, and they have said before that they have no interest in using E3 for core gaming anymore, so it wouldnt be their place to announce too many 3rd party initiatives like this. It would be ubisofts job to.

Honestly, people already complained that nintendo announced GTA DS because it was only a title screen. People wouldnt have been much happier hearing about motion plus in a game that they know nothing about yet, nor does nintendo know how well ubisoft will program the technology.

It is definitely smartest for nintendo to stay away from RS2 for now until they can see it later into its development cycle.

Ubisoft really needs to make up for the gigantic disappointment that was Red Steel.
Those controls were so sluggish and horrible, and while they now have MotionPlus to get the sword-fighting aspect down well, you just need everything else tweaked and made better.
And maybe a suggestion could be made to Ubisoft to re-do Red Steel to apologize to gameplayers everywhere?

  12. Jack says...

@Joltman: First off, I agree. Second, as Dark Knight and Terminator 2 have shown, the sequel sometimes bests the original. I hope that’s the case with Red Steel, especially now that Ubisoft won’t be rushing to get it out in time for a system launch (as it admits it did with Red Steel in the linked interview in this post).

Also, I like the re-release idea. I think Red Steel, tweaked and with MotionPlus controls this time around, would be a nice bonus game to include alongside Red Steel 2. By giving it away for free alongside the sequel, they’d guarantee additional sales, as people new and old to the series would buy it for a variety of reasons. For $50.

I really enjoyed the original game and I can’t see why so many people complain so much about it.
Granted it wasn’t perfect, but it sure was a helluva lot of fun. There haven’t been many “fun” FPS games as a lot of them take themselves too serious.
It’s good being able to play a game where you can just shoot all types of ill shit.
If this plays even slightly better then the original I’d still pick it up on Day One.

  15. Lord Toker says...

yeah i agree with robbie it wasn’t the best, but it wasn’t that bad for the first generation of games. this one looks to only improve on what was for me a pretty good game. so here’s hoping…

I’m really getting tired of the gaming press. It’s really getting annoying. Before they where cool because they talked about stuff I wanted to know now I feel like their room mate and I get to see how whiny they really are. I’m sorry I don’t respect that.

Any way red steel should be good now. We can even have 2 on 2 battles… why because if F’ing Wii sports can do it why can’t red steel? Also I hope the buy the quantum engine to be used on this game. The UT engine was ok but it did not impress and online did not work. Hell lots of stuff did not work.

  18. AC says...

i didn’t think red steel was all that bad for a launch title. but they seriously could address all issues with this sequel. looking forward to it. i hope they put the time into this title and don’t rush it.

  19. Daniel Primed says...

I’m not sure what Red Steel has to make up for, all of the disappointment and expectation was in your heads.

I really enjoyed the original Red Steel so I’m pleased to see a sequel on the way. :)

  20. Osiriss says...

I really liked the first one, I got used to the controls, took me a while to adjust, but once you’re “in” the controls are fine. I will surely buy the 2nd one as well. Unless they really miss the point this time. As well as the motion+ thing. I’m a real sucker for nintendo gadget add-on lol.
