IGN feature takes aim at top 20 Wii games
Sunday, September 28th, 2008 at 9:57pm by DerekNothing to play on Wii, you say? Tell that to this guy.
IGN posted proof of the contrary this weekend with a feature analysis of the 20 best games available on Wii. Their list includes most of the usual suspects, but a few surprises made the cut, as well.
Here’s the complete list in no particular order:
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Nintendo)
- Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo)
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo)
- Okami (Capcom)
- Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure (Capcom)
- Super Paper Mario (Nintendo)
- de Blob (THQ)
- Wii Fit (Nintendo)
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Nintendo)
- Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (Capcom)
- Wario Land: Shake It! (Nintendo)
- SSX Blur (Electronic Arts)
- Scarface: The World is Yours (Vivendi)
- Trauma Center: New Blood (Atlus)
- Boom Blox (Electronic Arts)
- Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 (Electronic Arts)
- Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Konami)
- No More Heroes (Ubisoft)
- Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo)
- Excite Truck (Nintendo)
Surprisingly, only 9 of IGN’s top 20 are first-party titles, meaning more than half the system’s best games are third-party products. Fourteen of the games on the list are exclusive Wii releases.

There are a few games I dislike in the list. However, except for SSX Blur, I see no surprises at all. I would rather include Wii Sports in the list.

Own 16, Played all 20.
Disagree with SSX Blur, but the reviews are really mixed on the controls.

I’ve played all but Pro Evolution Soccer. Good list, but expected most of the titles listed. I’m glad to see No More Heroes on the list. That game needs more recognition.

Tthese games are also little gems, but not good enough to make the list:
WarioWare: Smooth Moves
Endless Ocean
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Elebits
MySims
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Nights Journey of Dreams
Samba de Amigo
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Blastworks
Geometry Wars
Guitar Hero III
Battalion Wars

Glad to see blur got on the list. That game got a bad rap after a few weak-sauce reviewers couldn’t pull off ubers. Lots of great exclusive gaming to be had here. The list is missing some fantastic games. KillerHeroes mentions many of them.
I would also include Fire Emblem Radian Dawn. Thats a great game for the core.

No Ninjabread Man or Anubis 2? Oh well…I guess those JUST missed the cut.

SSX blur ftw! Great to see that someone appreciates the deep learning curve and great controls of the game. Imho every game doesn’t have to be a wii sports.

I own 10 of them, but have played 15. Is Scarface really that good?
September 29th, 2008 at 8:05 am
There is a bit of disagreement about Scarface being that good. Some people really like, others think it’s “just another remake”. The Wii version of The Godfather has the same thing happening.
Personally, I like The Godfather better between those two games… but that probably is due to my preference for the source material. Both are really decent games that most people seem to have skipped.

I would probably agree with about 10 of these games being “proof”.

BWii is underrated. as well as obscure II the aftermath. anyone that hasn’t played that game will be surprised at how well made it is, especially for 2 player coop. also, i would replace scarface with the godfather. chocobo’s dungeon FF fables should get a mention too. i would remove warioland, ssx, okami, and no more heroes which is overrated. also, de blob isn’t out in retail yet and should also be removed until people get their hands on it.

also i would put red steel on that list before excitetruck. wiiplay should also be on there just because of tanks.
