Guitar Hero World Tour Wii screens

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 at 12:45pm by Blake

Activision last week released 12 new screenshots for the Wii version of Guitar Hero World Tour, including the Wii Music knock-off mode that’s sure to obviate the purchase of Miyamoto’s latest (perhaps only) failed idea. Why buy Wii Music when you can play the full version of World Tour, plus a Wii Music bonus emulator with licensed tracks (aka not Yankee Doodle midi quality)? The mind, it boggles. Screens after the break.

Why buy Wii Music you ask? Well because I hear that Miyamoto infused each copy of the game with a tear of happiness. This of course insures it’s success.

    Good screens.

  2. Quizzly says...

Nice screens and thanks for keeping the info up on this one.
Too bad Im living in Sweden - if were lucky we might just see this one right before x-mas time.

  3. Joltman says...

Wii Music will not necessarily be a failure.
In the eyes of hardcore gamers? Probably.
For non-hardcore gamers that don’t really have the reaction time for Expert Mode on GH? An absolute success.

I think doing comparisons of Wii Music & GH’s Mii mode need to be compared from both perspectives before calling Wii Music a probable failure.
Shiggy came up with a great idea, IMO.

    YOU *POO FACE*

Dear sir, if you do not like being called an *POO FACE*, I suggest that you ban me posthaste—there is plenty of more where that came from; not only from me, from every non-jaded Nintendo fan who comments here.
Post after post reveal how far off the deep end you and Derek have gone. Now you’re just being an *POOP FACE*. I say that not because of your opinion but the way you choose to express that opinion. What is truly mind-boggling is how the same site that introduced Malstrom to Nintendo fans all over the world could be staffed by such jaded, IGNORANT cynics as the two of you. You wouldn’t be asking such idiotic questions if you had read been reading the Wii Music edition of Ask Iwata. If you had an inkling of what the software (not game—SOFTWARE. Can you imagine that? Nintendo releasing a NON-GAME? Try reaaaallly hard, I know you can!) is really all about you wouldn’t be just another one of the thousands jaded, cynical news editors (i.e. “hardcore gamers”) reporting that Miyamoto has failed when he clearly has not and will not fail with this software.

He is more excited about Wii Music than anything else he’s ever created, and you’re calling this software a failure? Blake, when something sells millions of copies (as this will do) it is not a failure. It is a commercial success. Nintendo, believe it or not, is a BUSINESS. They are in the business of making commercial successes. The truly sickening thing is that when all is said and done and you all the other hardcore gaming *POO FACES* that the video game news media is mostly comprised of are proven wrong x 1,000,000—-when you’re sitting around with egg on face from all the times you mocked the game, mocked Shigeru freaking Miyamoto, the god of video games—-you’ll continue on as if nothing happened.

The success of the Wii, the success of so-called “casual gaming”, these things have done nothing to change you, Blake. You’re just a frightened hardcore gamer; frightened at how Nintendo is changing the face of the industry. At this stage, why even call yourself a Nintendo fan? Shut down the very site that you founded, hang up your hat and report on PS360 news. You’re far better suited for that.

  5. Mark says...

    Wii Music sucks ass

  6. Poochy says...

    “Wii Music sucks ass”

    @ Blake:

And when you start up your inevitable PS360/hardcore gaming worship site, Mark will be one of your first readers!

  7. benthedorklord says...

Poochy - he’s not saying that he doesn’t think Wii Music will be a commercial failure. He’s just saying it doesn’t look like a very fun game. He’s not dissing the game on the business end - he’s dissing it on the entertainment end.

  8. Mark says...

    @ Poochy,

That’s true since the only systems I own are a Wii and DS. I’ll be sure to follow Blake to his PS360 worship site. I’m as hardcore as they come. I’m so hardcore in fact that I didn’t even finish Zelda or Metroid for the Wii. I buy on average 6 games a year. In fact, I just bought this hardcore game called Orbient for WiiWare and love it. You should check it out. I would even go as far as to say that I’m the hardcorest player on the face of the planet.

The fact is you are an ignorant pompous prick. I am a gamer. If you want to call that Hardcore then go right ahead. I still stand by my statement that Wii music sucks ass and since you seem to want to ride its balls all day, you sir suck ass as well.

  9. MewLover34 says...

This issue is far to polarizing for such an unimportant game.

  10. bbelt says...

    Holy crap that was funny.
Now I read Infendo every day, something I cant say about any other website. I like the different personalities and points of view. Most game sites seem to have a hive mind, where everyone rephrases the same ideas and dated concepts. I must admit though the site has changed quite a bit from the old old Revolution days. Writers seem to be more dogmatic and set in their ways as opposed to questioning and curious, open to new ideas.
Unless I play Wii Music and it dramatically changes my idea of the software, I wont be buying it. However, some people will. And they will like it. Good for them, I hope they have a lot of fun with it.
I didnt care for the tone of the write up either. A write up that was supposed to be about GH, but Blake couldnt stop himself from taking a potshot at Wii Music, and in turn a pot shot at people who might like Wii Music.
I’m glad their are different individuals who write for Infendo, with different tastes. If they dont like a game, fine. Tell us why. But dont insult those who might like it. This is one of the few sites where those people can read intelligent articles and not get ripped up for their different opinion when they comment. Or at least it was. I hope it stays that way. Or else you become just another game site like all the rest.
    P.S. Dont ban Poochy!

  11. Joltman says...

    @Mark:
Uh…why don’t you try it first before making such a declarative statement.
It hasn’t hit the stands yet, and yet you say it sucks?
Looking at a game and saying it sucks is not the same thing as playing a game and saying it sucks.

Just rent the game when it comes out and try it that way.
5 bucks to rent is worth it if you don’t want to buy a $50 game.

  12. David says...

Don’t worry, folks, Poochy won’t be banned.

And I’ll gladly answer Blake’s question “Why buy Wii Music when you can play the full version of World Tour…?”

    Because it’s cheaper.
($50 for Wii Music vs. $100 for game+guitar or $190 for game+full band)

  13. Jeff S. says...

Rent… arrrrrr there will be no rentin the wii music thar matey… arrrrrrrr but we’ll sure be a tryin it out to make up me own mind. arrrrrrrr

  14. neko to kuruma says...

Those red humbuckers look AWFUL. I know you can customize the instruments, but man, someone at Neversoft must be colorblind.

  15. Jeff says...

Wii music offers other genres of music other than Rock which has been over-represented?

  16. TBlack says...

Wii Music is all about Material Girl.

  17. Mark says...

    @ Joltman

Fair enough. I will take back my statement that Wii music sucks ass until after I have rented it.

  18. Quizzly says...

So many points and arguments made up - on games that arent even released yet?
Geez…..invite some friends and go play some games.
That will cheer you up :)

  19. Jon says...

“Geez…..invite some friends and go play some games.”

    What? …… friends? ….
    you mean… real people…?

    I… I only play online…

    *cold creepy breath*

  20. Poochy says...

“The fact is you are an ignorant pompous prick.”

    Ignorant?

Unlike Blake, I actually understand what Wii Music is all about. He still thinks it’s a “music game” comparable to Guitar Hero.

    Pompous?

When I do a writeup of a video game, I don’t force my opinions on others, opinions on completely unrelated games. Wii Music is not the same type of game as Guitar Hero World Tour. Wii Music isn’t even a game! The ugly truth is my friend that like most well-known video game news editors in the video game news media (which is to the real news media as the little league is to MLB), Blake can’t resist being a jackass. The cold, hardened cynic in him won’t allow him to have faith in Miyamoto just this one more time. His beloved world (and yours, too) of an all-hardcore gaming video game industry is crumbling thanks to Nintendo. And me? I couldn’t be happier for them.

    Prick?

At least I didn’t tell you you suck ass for being a hardcore gamer, or for saying that Wii Music sucks (which you would know, because you hopped into your imaginary time machine, went into the future, and played it).

  21. Poochy says...

More on the subject of Guitar Hero World Tour, am I the only one who is impressed with the graphics and animation? Vicarious Visions did a pretty decent job this time around. As far as Wii games go, GHWT is looking none too shabby! At the very least it’s a big improvement over GH3’s graphics.

  22. TBlack says...

But it’s just his opinion, does it really matter to you that much?

  23. Blake says...

Is there anyone else in this thread that has played Wii Music? I played a near final build of the game three months ago for an hour. Based on that experience, I found the game to be dreadfully boring.

But by all means, if you want to play an abstract version of Yankee Doodle Dandy this fall, go right ahead. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Also, I reserve the right to maintain my critical opinion even if Wii Music becomes a commercial success, as there are numerous games that sell well but fail to entertain me.

Oh, and those World Tour screens do look hot.

  24. Derek says...

There is more pompous, biased, uninformed, fanboy-esque, ideologically based grandstanding in the comments section of Wii Music articles on Infendo than Blake or I have ever been guilty of committing.

  25. Joltman says...

    @Blake:
Yes, I did play Wii Music at PAX this year.
I didn’t get to play for an hour as you did - I played for about 15 minutes, all the while having NOA staff help me along getting the feel for the controls down.

So maybe it gets boring after an hour; doesn’t the same thing happen if you play Wii Sports for an hour as well?

I do like the GHWT screens IMO.

  26. Gunner says...

    It’s just… Rock Band…

  27. Poochy says...

That’s how you respond to being called a typical hardcore gamer who doesn’t get what Nintendo is doing? Egads, Malstrom has written volumes about you types, how close-minded and afraid of change you are. But that doesn’t matter to you, because apparently this all boils to what is simply a matter of ideology, not who is right and who, based on 28 years of continuous success from Shigeru Miyamoto, will clearly be proven wrong.

  28. XCWarrior says...

Wow what a debate has gone on in here. Actually on topic, screens look nice, but I mean, it looks just like Rock Band.

As for the Wii Music stuff. Think of it this way, you can pay $50 for a demo version of the $190 GHIV game, that has the 50 game within it. I mean come on, none of us want to play the clarinet, or obo, or harp. It’s a waste of $50. I would rather fork over 3x that amount for a game I’ll actually play more than 2 hours just to see what it’s like.

Miyamoto is allowed to make mistakes. Wii Music is simply an example of this.

  29. KillerHeroes says...

I’m buying Wii Music just to piss Blake off.

  30. Poochy says...

    @ XCWarrior

What are you talking about? For the millionth time Wii Music isn’t a game, it’s a toy. Shigeru Miyamoto’s words—not my own. As a toy it succeeds in what it tries to do: provide a simple, fun diversion.

“”Miyamoto is allowed to make mistakes. Wii Music is simply an example of this.”

Hilarious. Again, when something is a commercial success it is by no means a mistake. When Miyamoto makes a product that you don’t like, believe it or not, Nintendo doesn’t care. Nintendo will always get money from it’s most loyal of consumers, and to the new gamers that it’s always reaching out to. How high and lofty you must think you are calling a game that isn’t even out a mistake. At least when I say it’s going to be a success I have 28 years of success to base that judgment on.

  31. deepthought says...

hahaha- wah wah wah my gaming is better than yours stop criticizing xyz game wah wah wah

god, honestly, i love this site sometimes.

gh4 looking solid for the wii. it’s weird, but many don’t even know that it’s basically turning into a rock band type game. just mentioned that piece of knowledge, which is pretty common on this forum, to some friends and they were like, ‘really?’. i think EA did a great job by getting RB2 out first for most (all) consoles, before the GH4 advertising reaches the masses and finally lets them know that it is going to provide an experience that competes with RB2.

Personally, I don’t want to play somebody’s crappy create a song. I just want a good catalogue of songs for 4 people to jam on at parties.

wii music looks boring. like i’ve said though, i think it’s going to sell. but come on nintendo, let’s see some skus that move the stock price. we’re down to frickin $40. way to blow it. (yada yada mkt is down yeah but ninny dropped after the e3- that’s a big hint. the second hint is that the video game industry generally resists business cycle problems, so wtf)

ok- back to giving the debate my attention

  32. Mark says...

    @ Poochy,

“Nintendo will always get money from it’s most loyal of consumers”

Do you see a trend here? You seem to be the one adamantly defending Nintendo and Miyamoto. You are the HARDCORE FANBOY that can’t even criticize Nintendo when they lay a brick. If Nintendo released a golden poo stick, you would automatically think it was the next best thing and you would buy it. WHY? Because “Nintendo will always get money from it’s most loyal of consumers” and Miyamoto has 28 years of success behind his belt so this golden poo stick must also be a success.

Just because Miyamoto thinks Wii music is awesome does not make it awesome. I think everyone here agrees that the game will be a commercial success. That doesn’t make it the game for me, Blake, or anyone else that thinks it looks dumb. That does not mean that we are wrong in our opinion. If we have to choose between Wii Music or GH:WT, I will take GH:WT. Remember, I only purchase 6 games a year on my Hardcore gaming diet so I don’t want to waste it on Wii Music.

I restate my position that you are an ignorant pompous prick. You were the one that started calling names in the first place. You are the one that stated “I don’t force my opinions on others”, yet that is exactly what you are trying to do. Therefore, you are an ignorant pompous prick.

I call it how I see it.

  33. Poochy says...

If you call it as you see it, then you must be blind as a bat. I didn’t force my opinion on anyone. I stated a fact: Wii Music will be a critical and commercial success. I find it funny how you continue to call me ignorant when you are putting yours on display whenever you call Wii Music a game.

“You are the HARDCORE FANBOY that can’t even criticize Nintendo when they lay a brick.”

You are the JUDGMENTAL PRICK who acts like he knows me. TWILIGHT PRINCESS was a brick in my opinion. Think about that for a minute; if I was disappointed in Nintendo for the way they made Twilight Princess, don’t think I hold them to a high standard? Ignorant, pompous, you throw all these names around but as far as I can see they are just ad hominem attacks, with no substance whatsoever. Hahah, you think it’s going to be good because Miyamoto has never been wrong, haha, fanboy! Wow! What an original flame!

All sarcasm aside, I do think that 28 years of success means something in the video game biz. It means you know what people like, even before they think they like it. You just keep on calling this Nintendo’s one big failure, and all the more I’ll be laughing at you and everyone else who doubted Nintendo. Biased fanboy? Maybe. But at least I have a lifetime of fun spent playing Nintendo games and 28 years of great Miyamoto games to lean on. But you? You have nothing. All you see is “OMG A GAME THAT DOES NOT APPEAL TO ME” which naturally = “golden poo stick” or whatever the silly thing you called the title that, like I said earlier, you must have magically travelled into the future to play.

  34. Poochy says...

And really, bricks don’t sell millions. And if you’re ready to honestly say that they do, then you’re really insulting everyone who will love this game. And that, my friend, makes you an incredibly shallow human being.

  35. Poochy says...

Mark, you haven’t given a single example of me being pompous or ignorant. I suggest you look those words up in a dictionary before you do.

  36. Jeff says...

I found it in rather bad taste to bring up Wii Music in a post about Guitar Hero and then impugn on Shigeru Miyamoto’s entire career.

No wonder this site is going into the tubes. Obvious flamebait by the writers. Not even Jack can save it.

  37. frstOne says...

Yess! David said it: because Wii Music is way cheaper.

Also because I don’t want more plastic stuff in my bedroom (I had enough with the balance board and the wii wheels).

BTW, how can you create new music using licensed tracks? I think you need midi for that. Or, isn’t this new game mode about creating music? I don’t get it.

  38. Mark says...

    @ Poochy,

    Ignorant: lacking knowledge or sophistication

You sir call Blake a jackass for making the comparison of Wii music to GH:WT. Have you ever played Wii Music? Blake has and therefore can make the comparison. He is not directly comparing the core GH:WT to Wii Music, but the Wii Music rip off mode in GH:WT. Again, he has played both, you have not. Therefore you are “lacking in knowledge” and that makes you ignorant.

Pompous: Characterized by excessive self-esteem or exaggerated dignity; pretentious

You keep harping on those of us that think this “toy” looks dumb. You so boldly claim that this game/toy is going to sell millions. You seem to want to make the claim that I “went into the future” yet you are the one that has gone into the future and has declared that “Wii Music will be a critical and commercial success”. The “toy” hasn’t even released yet. It has not even sold one copy, let alone millions. That seems pretty pompous.

And finally, your words of “I find it funny how you continue to call me ignorant when you are putting yours on display whenever you call Wii Music a game.”

“then you’re really insulting everyone who will love this game

Bad choice of words calling it a game Poochy.

But alas, my words will go directly over your head because you are in fact an ignorant pompous prick.

Prick: insulting terms of address for people who are
stupid or irritating or ridiculous (ie. Poochy)

  39. Blake says...

Jeff, it was in bad taste, I agree. My actions directly led to an off-topic discussion of Wii Music rather than a discussion of World Tour, which looks most awesome.

As a result, I sent out a new Infendo Policy yesterday to the team, which reads:

    Hey everyone,

Until further notice, Jack, Derek, Jake, and myself are ban hammered from publishing any story on Wii Music, as each of us has already formed a polarizing opinion of the game. David, Kyle, Will, Naomi: it’s all up to you as to who will review the game on Oct 20 and offer any second opinion and commentary. Our coverage will be better for it.

Any objections, I’ll be in my office making fun of kiddie games.

    Blake

  40. deepthought says...

    hahahahhaha

    nice, blake.

  41. TBlack says...

I love you Blake the Snake <3

  42. InvisibleMan says...

But, back to Guitar Hero: World Tour

What is actually the difference between Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2, besides the music roster??

  43. Mark says...

    InvisibleMan,

I think the biggest differences between the two is the music creator mode in GH:WT. Being able to create your own original music is going to be sweet. You can then upload your original tune for your friends to play and download on their system. I’m excited to see what kind of music people can create.

The core games look highly similar, so the only thing to separate the two will be the track lists. In my opinion, GH has always picked better songs for the track list, but I know some people that like the Rock Band track list better so its all a matter of taste.

  44. Poochy says...

    @ Mark:

Mark, Mark, Mark, your words remind me of an old adage:

“I’m rubber, and you’re glue. Whatever you throw at me, bounces off and sticks to you.”

    Ignorance:

I did not call Blake a jackass for comparing Wii Music to Guitar Hero World Tour. I called him a jackass for being a jackass about it. He is calling Wii Music a failed idea before the title is even released. By saying how his mind “boggles” over why anyone would buy Wii Music instead of GH:WT or even buy both titles, he is belittling those will chose to buy this game or have already preordered it.

Also, this isn’t the first time he has made comparisons between Wii Music and Guitar Hero World Tour. He and Derek made comparisons before the Mii mode was even announced. They have convinced themselves that these two games belong to the same genre when in fact one of them (A), isn’t even really a game to begin with, and (B) shares almost nothing in common with the other and is directed at a totally different audience. Thus: IGNORANCE.

    Pompous:

You got the definition of pompous down but you failed to mention where I acted as though I were puffed with pride or better than anyone else. Does calling someone out on something and calling them a jackass make you pompous? If that’s what I am, what are you?

    Prick:

That’s a matter of personal opinion, Mark. You might as well call Jeff a prick, and anyone else who agrees with me.

But alas, my words will go directly over your head because you are in fact an ignorant pompous prick.

I know you are, but what am I?

In all seriousness, every time you post you only succeed in making yourself look worse. I may have a sarcastic, even haughty attitude at times but I have not resorted to repeatedly uttering ridiculous insults, and neither have I belittled you by insinuating that you are too stupid to understand my words. I don’t even have to! You’re making yourself look bad without any help from me. If you choose to respond, please do so without the angsty composure of a cynical, embittered Kotaku commenter (wait….unless that’s what you really are, Mark.)

  45. Poochy says...

    @ InvisibleMan:

I would say that the biggest difference between Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour is that GHWT’s creators actually give a crap about their Wii-owning customers. Harmonix seems content with releasing half-assed PS2 ports. And what’s wrong with the PS2 ports? For starters, there is no character creation mode in the PS2 Rock Band titles; they forgo having to rebuild the graphics engine from scratch in favor of using pre-rendered footage from the PS3/360 versions. Whereas Activision (Vicarious Visions, actually) actually builds the Wii version from the ground up, using all the system’s bells and whistles to make the game actually look comparable to the other versions, and creating all new Wii-specific modes to boot.

With Rock Band 2 what Harmonix is doing to you as a Wii owner is basically coming to you with a tube of lubricant and telling you to bend over. On other hand Red Octane’s message seems to be: “You’re giving us your money, and we value our patronage enough that we want to make sure that above all else you are satisfied with your purchase”.

  46. Mark says...

    @ Poochy,

“You might as well call Jeff a prick, and anyone else who agrees with me.”

Have you noticed how I haven’t made reference to anyone else that likes Wii music. The funny thing about all of this is I purposefully picked you out knowing that you would be the one on the other end that would get a rise. I don’t feel the need to call Jeff or Joltman or anyone else that thinks Wii Music is awesome a prick. Why you ask? Because they were not the ones coming out the gate with guns blazing. They just stated their opinion without trying to belittle anyone with a different opinion. You on the other hand were the aggressor by calling Blake a Jackass for his opinion. Therefore you became THE PRICK.

“but I have not resorted to repeatedly uttering ridiculous insults” yet that is exactly what you have done. Just look at your first post. Need I say more?

I think you would make a good politician. You are probably very likable. People probably think highly of your opinions and that will take you places in your life. You can probably do over a thousand curls with your guns. You may have many leather bound books and your office probably smells of rich mahogany. I don’t know if you know this, but you are a big deal. Just keep your chin up and I’m sure we’ll meet again;)

  47. deepthought says...

is anyone really excited about music creator? that sounds like nearly the worst idea ever. most people have enough trouble at karaoke. in bars. where they serve alcohol to the audience. but now we’re going to let these people create music?

    oh helllllll no.

i think the biggest interesting difference really is the song list. and symbols on the drum… as if it really matter which virtual drum toy you pretend to be playing. just give me one where the pedal doesn’t break and i’ll be happy. maybe some real drumsticks too… and some symbols….

  48. JohnJ says...

    hahahahaha, That’s funny Mark.

    You two are both idiots.

Though I think Wii music has potential, Poochy’s argument is lame and is definitely the bigger moron.

  49. Eolirin says...

Late to the party again it’d seem. …

Poochy, even if what you’re trying to say is pretty much right, how you’re going about it is very wrong. >< Let go of the anger, it doesn’t do you any good.

Blake, whether a game bores you or not is more of a matter of preference rather than a matter of quality. I can’t stand Dickens but he’s endured time for a reason. Tale of Two Cities is considered a classic piece of literature, and for very solid reasons, but it puts me to sleep for about 90% of it’s pages.

So the reason why you’d buy Wii Music over GH4 is because they’re not attempting to hit the same niche. Whether you prefer one niche or another is irrelevant in discussing the quality of the product; all that matters in their ability to fill those particular niches. Wii Music is about exploration, GH4 is about challenge. There’s a huge difference in what they set out to do, and you’d never buy one to replace the other. If you’re not interested in one, that’s fine, but I don’t think anyone here really believes that they have the right to dictate what other people enjoy, even if they can’t understand why.

It’d be great if we could lose the hyperbole, all the way around.
